Yes they do, and that is covered in The Rules:

Quote:
Some companies (using similar but different names) may serve more than one function. List such companies only once

In case of Disney it's not that easy I think.

Before 2007 Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures was named Buena Vista Pictures Distribution, Inc. Would you have deleted Disney (or any other name with Disney in it) if the movie was still released under the Buena Vista name?

And what about Marvel or Pixar, just like Disney part of The Walt Disney Studios. Should we delete those as well. From my point of view we shouldn't.

I say we use the rules as they are updated on 16-04-2016 after for instance Disney has changed it's name:

Part of the rules were updated. The abbreviation part goes back to 2007, years before Disney decided to brand Walt Disney Pictures to Disney in 2011. So Disney isn't an abbreviation anymore for the recent releases, so in my opinion this part of the rules is outdated for the recent releases.
Quote:
Ofcourse we can make our own rules but when they stated as they are i feel we need to comply or else it becomes chaos. Like everywhere else in this world!

If there's proof a rule is outdated I think it's no problem certainly knowing more rules are waiting for a decent update for years now.
Quote:
BTW i am the one who changed Disney into Walt Disney Pictures because of the mentioning in the rules and other contributors who pointed this out.

Many have been approved and others still wait for approvement!

The kind of updates you did, are approved without even looking at them. Especially when there are yes votes and we all know you always get yes votes on all your updates...

The dozens which were waiting for approval were declined. So it looks like the screeners don't to know what to to with it, or they agree Disney is no longer an abbreviation for Walt Disney Pictures anymore for the recent releases.

So that's what I wanted to know, but though that seems to be answered there are a lot of new questions to be answered.

Understandable, but in this case I think both of them serve a different function.

Would you have let Disney out if it was released by Buena Vista Pictures Distribution? Different name, but the same company. Or what about Marvel Studios. Just like Disney part of The Walt Disney Company.

So in case of Brave there's a Distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures at the end of the endcredits which would be the Theatrical Release Studio.

At the beginning the movie starts with Disney presents a Pixar Animation Studios film, where Disney and Pixar Animation Studios are the production companies. So for Brave that would mean the studios we list are:

  • Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures
  • Disney
  • Pixar Animation Studios

It's an easy example to make something clear about abbreviate studio names not knowing that Disney branded Walt Disney Pictures to Disney.

But when that actually happened the rules should have been updated on that point, but unfortunately that never happened and now somebody use it to change a correct studio. But I think we can agree that the change to Walt Disney Pictures is invalid for movies where the credits say Disney presents.

These titles are contributed (and probably some more which I don't have in my database)

    -Beauty and the Beast (2017)
    -Cars 3
    -Cinderella (2015)
    -Coco
    -Dumbo (2019)
    -Finding Dory
    -The Good Dinosaur
    -Incredibles 2
    -Inside Out
    -Maleficent
    -Pete's Dragon (2016)
-Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales
    -Zootropolis

In my opinion for all of them the change from Disney to Walt Disney Pictures is invalid.

For the movies before 2011 Disney would be an abbreviation for Walt Disney Pictures, but since Disney branded it from Walt Disney Pictures to Disney it isn't anymore for the new movies, so therefor Disney should be a correct studio name for the movies since 2011 in my opinion.

I think The Muppets (2011) was the first movie which used the Disney only logo, but in the opening credits it still was Walt Disney Pictures presents, as T!M already said. Since Brave it's just Disney presents for all movies and Walt Disney Pictures isn't listed anywhere in the credits anymore.

I'm bringing this up again since somebody is changing a lot of Disney credits to Walt Disney Pictures. pointing to this part of the rules.

    Quote:
Do not abbreviate Studio or Media Company names. e.g, use Universal Pictures not just Universal; The Criterion Collection rather than Criterion or Criterion Collection; Walt Disney Pictures not just Disney. Exception: If the studio name is too long to fit, use standard abbreviation rules.

Disney branded Walt Disney Pictures to just Disney since 2011. So, as already stated by iPatsa, Disney isn't an abbreviation anymore and can be used as a studio and in my opinion the rules are outdated for the movies later than 2011.

Hereby some new pictures taken from the opening credits from Brave. This is how Disney list it since 2011.

First the logo which is being used nowadays:

    But more important:

So in my opinion Disney is the studio we list in this case and not Walt Disney Pictures, or am I wrong?

There's also a credit for The Feminine Touch (1956) in the database, but her common name is Mandy Miller.

There are also credits for (an) Adult Actress(es), but I have no idea who they are or what their common names are, so I leave those out.

In my opinion this is not any different than discussed in this topic.

So if we only list the individual credits Jeff Jarvis is the only valid credit.

Checked The Amazing Spider-Man 2 - by your reasoning, we would have to remove Screenwriter, Story By,
OMB, Producer, Ex. Producer just from the opening main crew credits, because they are group credits. And from the ending credits we would remove under group credits - Art Director, RRM, SSE, Sound Designer, Costume Supervisor.

    No, we wouldn't.

If there's a list with art directors they all have an art director credit and that's a valid role. According the rules it only seems to be allowed to list individual credits like Special Effects Supervisor, Special Effects Designer etc. In this case Jeff Jarvis is listed as the Special Effects Supervisor. For the persons under the Special Effects header it's not clear what they have done. For example Mike Reedy was probably a special effects technician which we don't list as he was credited that way.

It's too bad that we can't get Ken to clarify what he meant by "Individual credits".

In my mind, the post that Gamemaster linked to is interesting, and I strongly disagree that it is the same situation as this one. A lot of names w/o specific roles under an effects company divider do not constitute individual credits. Everyone seemes to have agreed on that. And I wonder if that is not what Ken had in mind.

This situation is different, though. Let's compare it to the classical The Time Machine:

Are you saying that neither Warren nor Chang should be credited because they don't each have the credit next to their name? If that's how we are now to interpret the rule, then that is a game changer.

I really don't think that Ken meant that the layout of the credits should determine their viability.

Special Photographic Effects is listed as a valid role. Both have that role and should be listed. The way I read the rules, Special Effects or Visual Effects alone is not specific enough and has to be followed up by Supervisor, Designer or director to avoid that the technicians or artists are listed as a visual effects credit as well.
