  Finally done!

Got back from a family trip on Monday, rolled up my sleeves ready to get to work, only to discover a sluggish machine acting weirdly. That usually means ... yes, the dreaded orange "Update and Restart" dots were on the Power button. That was 2 days ago.

After hours of agonizing Blue Screen of Death with the annoying Spinning Dots of Doom, 3 reboots with independent 0 - 100% counters, followed by one final "Cleanup" with its own 0 - 100% counter, I think it is over for now.

My system reads: Version 10.0.19042 Build 19042

Be forewarned: don't try to cheat and get some work done in-between reboots. If you have orange dots indicating pending updates, better go ahead and proceed. I learned the hard way trying to use a partially updated version of Outlook.

Upside: Windows does seem to be running faster and feels "cleaner" - whatever that means.

Installed 20H2 in October. Didn't take longer than ~ 20 minutes like all biannual updates.

But at least it works for you now!

Not sure why mine got so far behind, or took so long. Maybe you are VIP! (Edit: Don't want to step over your last post, but Greenie!)

These large updates are distributed in waves. Sometimes you get them in the first 1-2 weeks, sometimes within months.

But you can always install them manually or force them to show up starting at day one, this is what I usually do:

Same version here, but already installed on August 13th, 2020. But I always do intend to go for the manual download as suggested by Assassin, to avoid the frustrating of waiting. I only wait a week or so in case any major bugs on launch appear, wouldn't be the first time. And with Microsoft policies, these system updates are next impossible to avoid forever. So better adapt early, I say.

Updating is a lot faster since I moved to PC's with the C: (with C:\Windows) being an sizeable SSD. Still working without an SSD for that, perhaps?

Anyways, next major release is on the doorstep here , although it appears minor in UI.
The fall release, see for example here, is more significant for the UI.

So mediadogg, you can plan your leisure time now    .

Many thanks for that!!!!

Sometimes I wonder if Microsoft considers that we own a PC for purposes other than managing MS software, configuring things, installing drivers and making purchases from the Store. It is becoming a larger and larger fraction of my time.

I am still working on replacing or fixing broken drivers from this week's update.

Did mine last night. It took a couple hours+ and a couple restarts.

Well of course, what each person experiences is very much dependent on the starting point and environment. I can walk to my neighbor's house in 2 min, but some of my friends would need almost 24 hours, using the fastest means of transportation available, to meet me there. Silly example, but you get my point.

IDK. I have a cheap ass computer that I bought two years ago. Could be the more complex the computer, the longer the update would take (I only use mine to browse and little else).

Exactly my point. My computer is older, and "cheap" is the eyes of the beholder. But it is a good machine, core i7, 64 bit with lots of memory. I also have several versions of Visual Studio and lots of other development tools, several versions of TurboTax, loads of various device drivers to support all the gadgets I tinker with and program for, video editing software, video capture software for making tutorials, and the list goes on. Could that have anything to do with how complicated installing a new windows version is on my machine?

Politely disagree on that.

OK, third party software like (I assume) TurboTax will probably have little bearing on it, but you can't be sure. A lot depends on whether they use Microsoft support libraries if they've been compiled with MS VS C++ or Basic or... On minor updates the .NET framework updates always seem to cost a lot of time, so with a major update you can assume a time penalty.

Also, major upgrades tend to have fixes for lots of drivers (which apart from physically connected devices, do not overlook video capture which could affect the video card driver(s)). It seems the upgrades software checks whether any replacement driver is really necessary, meaning device checks hence "benign" device time-outs. Oh, and on that topic, don't overlook these time-outs when these routines check the possibly necessary updates to BIOS drivers. And if you've disconnected odd-ball (no offense intended) devices, a good precaution in itself, detecting a driver for it means testing the connection, a next time-out...

Finally, if your machine is older, meaning no SSD or "only" 5400 rpm hard drives, this in itself slows down the process. And if you didn't bother defragging your C:\ drive, C:\Windows in particular, the replacement of thousands of files does impact. Every deleted file, renamed file (the "go back to previous version" option!)  and new file requires a trip to the drive index, costing head movement and rotation latency. Every single file. In normal use seldomly noticed thanks to the present "intelligent" preloading by the OS, but when upgrading...

So, if your machine is "loaded" with hardware and "lower level" software I guess one pays a penalty in a major upgrade.

Oh by the way, my laptop is part of a domain managed by Windows Server 2012. If you think that doesn't add complexity (permissions, group policy, file history, etc.), I have a bridge in Manhattan I would like to sell you.
