| | Posted: | | | | While contributing common names for linking last night, I ran into an issue with names with suffixes (Jr., Sr.) and how to list them in the name field. I chose to list such names all the same way without commas between the last name and the suffix. A user pointed out another good argument which is that the most credited name form should be used even if it includes the comma. This will cause the names to be inconsistently entered but it will be less work to enter them this way since fewer will have to be changed in order to link them.
Which way should names with suffixes be entered into the name field (the 'credited as' will obviously match the credited form):
Consistently without commas
Consistently with commas
Use the most credited form
Something else

Therefore we could leave out all those suffixes for the common name only and instead fill in the birth year. Wouldn't that be more stable over time? Just an idea. |

After his father passed (T/G/L Sr.) nothing changed. He is still Jr and my brother is still III.
I thought once a Jr. always a Jr., could be wrong though |

Never heard of this before. I am a Jr. My dad has passed away and I have no intention of ever dropping or changing the Jr. to Sr. I agree, hal. I never heard of that either. It is not uncommon in everyday usage for a Jr. to simply drop the suffix, once Sr. has passed, Lon Chaney, Jr. was frequently credited as Lon Chaney after his father died. I do this myself for every day usage, but for signatures and formal documents and settings I was given Jr. and Jr. I will always be. Skip | | | ASSUME NOTHING!!!!!!

So do we give victory to the comma and start contributing? Have a run off of the top 2 choices? It would be nice to link up the comma Jr.'s with the no-comma Jr.'s. Over 100 votes I believe. That has to be the largest vote I can remember. Obviously something people are interested in. (it's the lurkers out there.... we see you ) |

You are on the right track, we need a single format so we are all on the same page. Obviously as credited remains the same, but for the common name they need to be handled one way, whatever that one way is.
