It seems that both Sony and MS don't make any money from the consoles themselves, but from accessories and software. So if this is true why not make a universal console and then they can all develop games for one console? This would be best for the consumer, but I bet this will never happen. Because consumers interests are not their interests. I bet if something like this were to happen it would end up like the HD dvd format wars.

.....

An HDMI question. It seems like HDMI is in a constant state of change, so if you buy hardware (HD DVD BluRay and Reciever, and TV) that is say 1.3a compliant and 1.4 comes out, can you upgrade your hardware to this new revision?

Actually, Sony makes a lot of money from their consoles by the end of their lifespans.  Both of the PS models before this one has sold over 100 million units.  They are making tons of money off the PS2 right now, because of software sales coupled with hardware sales.  MS and Sony would not be able to work together on a gaming console.  MS is in favor of a closed system while Sony is in favor of an open system.  That is a big core difference.  There would be no solid base to build from.

HDMI has been in a constant state of flux.  That is why they created HDMI 1.3 (it was going to be named 2.0 but the group changed their minds at the last minute).  There is really no difference between HDMI 1.1 and 1.2 feature wise.  That is not so, for HDMI 1.3.  This one was created to be viable longer than the others (HDMI 1.1/1.2).

Depending on what new functionality comes about after DEEP COLOR and advanced audio codec pass-through will determine whether the PS3 would be able to provide that functionality, but most likely it would be upgradable to a HDMI 1.4 or 2.0 should it come around within the next 6 years or so.

Thanks for the info, so based on your answer hardware (tv's, receiver's, DVD players, etc) have the potential of being uprgraded to the next revision of HDMI. I know your answered based on the PS3.

I could not find any definitive answer as to whether or not it can be uprgraded to the next revision. All i could find is that you shouldn't look for a revision rather look for certain features i.e. deep color.

I am familiar with HDMI revisions and what the features are etc, but I don't know how the revisoins are stored on current HDMI devices. It sounds like a firmware upgrade would take care of that, but how can you flash/upgrade your TV, Receiver if there is no interface to load the update to. I know HD-DVD players have an etherport and you can load update from disc on Blu-Ray players, but on a reciever and tv?? So if you bought a tv before HDMI 1.3 is out does that mean you can't take advantage of the new features?

I have no comment to make

PS3 two day sales 185,000.  Two day Wii sales 105,000

Not that one could or should really compare the Wii to next-gen consoles in the first place.

Which implies I read PS3 fan sites, and you would think that they would be less inclined to tell such tales

TVs and receivers will definitely have HDMI 1.3 in the near future, but will NOT be capable of being upgraded beyond whatever HDMI version they ship with.

DVD players probably won't have HDMI 1.3.  It wouldn't be able to take advantage of it due to the limited nature of DVDs.  There is no room for advanced audio codecs on a DVD title.  I don't believe the color level encoded on a DVD title is anywhere near being able to take advantage of DEEP COLOR (billions of colors).

The PS3 will probably be HDMI upgradeable.  Supposedly the only reason XBox 360 could not make a HDMI accessory is because they didn't have the 'HANA' scaler from what I gathered.

I would look for the HDMI revision.  The HDMI revision let's you know what it can do, if you are familiar with the specs of the different HDMIs.  For instance, since the PS3 has HDMI 1.3, I know that it is "deep color" compliant and is capable of passing advanced audio codecs to my receiver to be decoded.  Either way of choosing is fine.  If the HDTV has "deep color" as a feature, you automatically know it has HDMI 1.3.

HDMI revisions seem to be hardware based.  I haven't seen anyone upgrade any HDMI version without new HDMI circuitry.  That is why I tried to limited my use of the word "upgrade" to the PS3.  Technically, it's more of addition than upgrade.  Plus, it depends on what the next revision of HDMI will bring to the table as far as new features.

No. You would not be able to take advantage of the new HDMI 1.3 features on a TV without HDMI 1.3.  If a new TV is bought within the next 4 to 5 years, that new TV would definitely be able to make full use of the HDMI 1.3 features.  Most likely any HDTV in the future with any future revision of HDMI (1.4, 1.5, 2.0, whatever) will be able to take full advantage of the HDMI 1.3 features.  This is due to the backwards compatibility for all HDMI specs.

I think it's cool that you are expanding your horizons by reading material from multiple sources.  I also would like to add that if people would like to compare the Wii to the PS3 anyways, they should look at how much more money people are will to spend to get a PS3 in the UK (and the world) than the Wii.

So please don't get offended, this is only meant for those people that want to make an unsophisticated comparison between the Wii and the PS3.
