I was correcting a LoTR cast list (double voice credit) when it occurred to me; should Andy Serkis have a voice only credit? He did perform all the motions for Gollum, but you never see him on screen.
Similar situation with Alan Tudyk in I, Robot.
So I thought I'd start this poll, how should we credit motion capture actors?

I don't know about a general policy, but in this particular case I wouldn't credit it as simple voicework. Some of the motion capture was done in controlled environments, but a lot of the time he was on the set with the actors. Replacing him visually with a digital creation shouldn't detract from that.

Ah, that's a good point... I just assumed he wasn't credited with voice onscreen.

It is very clear from the hours of documentary evidence that Andy Sirkis WAS Gollum.  He performed all the movements which were captured on film using a digitized motion suit.  While the Gollum we see on screen looks nothing like Andy, the movements Gollum makes ARE Andy.

Saying he should get a voice only would be like saying Anthony Daniels wasn't C3-P0, or Kenny Baker wasn't R2-D2 in Star Wars just because we couldn't see the actual person.

how is he credited in the actual film credits?

isn't that the source of this information?

not to be a stick, but regardless of how we feel about his work as gollum or that big monkey, it still boils down to the end credits.

He is credited in the cast list as Golum in the Special Extended Edition of FOTR, I don't have my "regular" edition to check. I did not pull the other 2 to check, but I assume he is credited the same way in all three.

The end credits scroll starts with Directed by, writing credits, producers, and a few other, then the 12 headline cast, then "Featuring" a couple, then  "With Andy Serkis as Gollum", and further in the scroll there is Cast in Alphabetical Order where again the credit is Gollum  Andy Serkis.

So clearly, no voice.

The very first thing he said was "I was correcting a LoTR cast list (double voice credit)". It COULD be that there are other profiles besides the ones you have in your DB...

Who's sweating it? I was curious that's all, as there's no mention of motion capture actors in the rules. In fact, I'm of the opinion that they should get a full credit as opposed to voice only, which is what he has at the moment.
And I seriously hope you're not insinuating that everything in the db is correct?

Oh good heavens no, I am not nuts, the best we can hope for is probably 95% accuacy, but I do know that those titles have reecently been given a fine tooth comb, so with the exception of changes made 3.0 they should be OK, depending on where the data came from, I guess i should get around to looking at them.

Just to remind you that the DVD world is larger than R1USA... unless you are checking every version in every locality of course?!
