I though their argument was that forum agreements had no force to override an existing rule.  There's no rule on common name yet, right?  Or am I mistaken?

That would be some very bizarre logic, RH. We can either accept poll information on not, we can't pick and choose. It's NOT written in the Rules YET, this is only a recommendation to a procedure, the ONLY person that can do otherwise is Ken.
He may decide to go in a different direction. <shrugs>

I don't think it's that bizarre.  Here's how I see it.  There's no rule, and we need to do SOMETHING.  There's been a lot of dissonance over the actual parsing.  There is a lot of agreement on the "maiden" name thing (although I agree with you 100% on stage names taking precedence).  Seems like some kind of uneasy truce.  It's better than anarchy and Ken can use this to formulate a written rule.  I really like the participation Ken has had since the 3.0 release, so I think we're making progress.  That's my opinion, anyway.

Personally, I have my "Jada//Pinkett"'s already done in my local and ready to upload with "credited as".  Just wanting for a consensus.

For someone who is always whining about being harassed, and who always says they want to be left alone, who is ignoring me, you sure are spoiling for an argument today! But then what's new!

I have never said the "Forum agreement have no force and cannot be used", I have always said that things discussed in the forum are not rules, and should not be treated as such. So if someone chooses to ignore them, then it is that persons right. Similarly voting based on a forum discussion is out of line imo.

Of course that is true, but the polls do display the general concensus of forum users, which in turn could be considered a representation of all users.
I am sure Ken would at least consider such information as part of his decision making process.

Didn't Ken or Geri say we could use multiple sources for common name submissions.  Isn't Ivelos a source, we have a DB that we can use the get data from current profiles (one source) and we have this forum (another source).
Are you local?
This is a local shop the strangers you would bring would not understand us, our customs, our local ways.

I would give you a qualified yes Tracey. The qualification would be that somewhere along the way there has to be a documented reference. In other words llet's say you want to cross reference to "Sleepy Hollow", then that title should have as part of its notes the additional documnetation that leads to H//BC or whatever. Did I make that clear.

Whilst I agree with you in principal, notes in the contribution would only be seen by people that have that profile in their collection and you'll still have both H/B/C & H//B C in the database. Wheras if we have a pinned topic here in the forums summarising the documentation or poll results then we'll all have a single point of reference and we can "fix" all of the profiles.

Valid point then that user may not be able to provide a cross-reference, right, so he should document the change. No biggie.

As James has pointed he has 1900 + name variants to play with, have fun, James. I haven't looked and right now I don't want to know. Can you see 1900 pinned polls to wade through, Stuuart. Which is yet another reason to find the principle behind say Jada Pinkett and apply that to all, then we don't have to worry about the polls anymore we have the solution, just apply it, no discussion, no debate, no arguments. It could happen.

What I have said is that forum agreements cannot over-ride the Current Rules.

I have never said that forum consensus cannot be reached for areas that are either gray or are not addressed at all, like parsing!

So, are the results different this time too?  What is this, the fifth or sixth time we've seen this same poll?

On her birth Cert it will say Bonham Carter under Surname not Surnames it's one name so can't be split over 2 names. Germany even has laws about this to allow us brits to have names that's Germans can't. If she gets married she will not be Helen Bonham (Spouses Surname)
