When profiles from IVS' old database are merged, by default the country of origin will be blank.  We can default them to United States to cut down on unneeded contributions.  However, films produced outside the United States would still need to be changed via contribution.

I think that defaulting to United States will save more time and effort in the long run. I say, go for it.

Default to US.  That will be the end result for most of them anyway.

Could you give us some figures first if possible?
For example, what proportion of DVDs so far that have a CoO already in have that CoO as US?
I'd say if it was well above 50% then it maybe ok, otherwise I'd go for blank.
I think it's dangerous to assume that the vast majority will be US when it's just as likely there's a lot of locally produced films and discs in the European and Asian markets (including Bollywood).

Just had a thought, could you filter using the old "Foreign" genre from 2.4 and leave those blank, making the rest US?

Defaulting to US is a little bit Hollywood centric in my opinion. I'd rather see the field blank than assigned to something wrong.

It is not Hollywood centric at all.  The goal is to cut down on the number of contributions that do nothing but add CoO.  Defaulting to something is better than defaulting to nothing.

Would only work for the US locality. In every other locality foreign would have a different meaning. But I would not assume that the genre foreign is assigned to every profile where the country of origin is different than the locality. I strongly vote for leaving the field blank.

If the data is not known for sure, I would default to unknown aka empty.

But at the same time I really don't think you should underestimate the size of the European, Indian and Asian markets - I mean, look at how many films Hong Kong churns out?

Where are the people now who usually jump in with "no data is better than inaccurate data"? I'd say that most profiles which will be added to the database by this merging is lacking more or less data anyway. Therefore the lack of country of origin is no big deal. But defaulting to US would simply be wrong.

Help me to understand your thinking on this, guys (those who prefer blank on all).

This database has many more region 1 profiles than the others.
Most of the region 1 profiles are from Hollywood.
Leaving them all blank means all profiles would have to be updated.

I don't get it. Why would you want to do work that a bot could do for you? It's not as if any of us are getting paid for updating profiles.

perhaps this could be done with the R1 discs, but i don't think it should be done to other region discs, otherwise all the british tv series ( of which there are a great deal) would all suddenly be tagged (pardon the expression) as u.s. works.

either that or leave it blank entirelyl.

oh, maybe i should actually vote now that i've spouted.

Maybe because not everyone owns mainly region 1 Hollywood DVDs?
Maybe because an empty CoO field is much better than a wrong one?

My instinct is against this - hollywood does not produce the majority of the films in the world so I think this  is a bad idea. I would prefer no info than incorrect info.

Egos.  They just can't stand that the majority of profiles are from Region 1.  I'm sure I'll catch hell from the America bashers out there, but facts is facts.
