If the Full Frame (or Pan & Scan) box is checked the aspect ratio should be left blank, isn't that correct? I've seen some contributions where they add aspect ratio 1.33:1 when Full Frame is checked, which I think is unnecessary.

Largely Behemot, because that is the way the program is designed, even if it you leave it blank the Online will make 1.33.

My thoughts on it is that 1.33:1 is in the program so it is meant to be used

No it doesn't, hence the updates Behemot mentioned which solely add the aspect ratio. This hasn't been possibly until Ken fixed it recently.

Admittedly, the AR selector is in a weird spot, indicating it should only be used for Widescreen. (It is indented below Widescren and the Anamorphic checkbox, which is indented already...) But then why is 1.33 available for selection...?

The Rules don't address this, so either way is actually o.k. Saying that "it is there, so it must be used" is a bad argument...

The only person that can declare it a bad argument, Achim is Ken. I view it as part of his Program design therefore use it.

It shows the aspec ratio as :1 in text mode in graphics mode it shows it as 1.33:1.  For me that would be reason to include the the aspec ratio.

Well, we have other fields that we dis-allow to be used in certain cases, through the rules...

The Rules are silent here, so both cases are possible. As I said, the location where the selector is located can be taken as an indication, it is only to be used as a sub-item for the Widescreen check box.

I thought I have seen that before too, but didn't mention it, as I couldn't remember where. Now that is a good argument.

The default ratio for Full Screen is 1.33:1, and is often referred to as Academy Ratio, though the true AR is actually slightly different like 1.36:1 or somesuch.  Don't remember without looking it up.  In any case, you enter a ratio for WS, why not for FS/P&S?

1.37, if memory serves.

I completely agree and been doing it myself "forever". I just said (twice), that the location where the selector is located may indicate to some users, that it is not to be used for Pan & Scan of Full Frame. Maybe something to be added to the Rules...?

One reason for putting 1.33:1 in a fullscreen profile is that if you don't, then the XML exported from the program has a blank field for <FormatAspectRatio>. While this is not incorrect, it requires exception handling in external programs.

Full Frame and Pan&Scan shouldn't necessarily default to 1.33:1 anymore, with the new widescreen and HD TVs being ~1.77:1

This is not entirely correct afaik. AR originally was 1.37:1 but was later changed to 1.33:1 (don't quote me on that...). Even if it wasn't changed, in fact a huge number of Full Frame movies are actually 1.33:1 (measured!!). In my personal collection only <10% of the Full Frame movies are 1.37:1.

And I suspect that most of those old full frame movies made prior to the early 50's got 'adjusted' to 1.33:1 when they were mastered for DVD release, if only to keep the uninformed viewers from squawking about it not fitting the screen right.
