I'm trying to contribute Nosferatu:The first vampire UPC #780273072192 ISBN # 1-58077-063-0 Released by Arrow Home Entertainment & Front Row Entertainment. The UPC is just from me reading it off the cover, My cuecat died a couple of days ago, so I don't currently have a Barcode scanner.

DVDProfiler says that it cannot verify the UPC. As far as i know this should have been a legit release.

It says it was made in Canada...but i can't see that t would make a difference

Any Suggestions on being able to get this in the main database, or is it a local copy only movie?

Thanks,
frizz

Just to note, I work nights, so I'm usually only on the boards here from 1 AM - 5 AM Eastern, So if I don't seem to reply quickly, this is probably why.

Hi Frizz,

the problem you are having is not that DVD Profiler can not verify the UPC (your formatting is fine and has nothing to do with your reading the number as opposed to scanning).

the problem you are having is that this DVD is not in the database, what you should do is click add dvd to database, then create a profile for this title from scratch. if you click on the database link at the top of the invelos webpage, and then look to the right, you will find the contribution rules - please review these and follow them as you create your profile. once complete (with cover scans if you have a scanner) - you should then go to Online->Contribute DVD Profile. Your data will then be sent to Invelos for approval - for new titles to the database, it should take less then 48hrs for this title to be in the database. Since this is a user built database you will be doing all your fellow users who may eventually own this title a great service.

I hope this has answered your question - feel free to post back if you need any help.

I read his post as saying that he was trying to contribute the film.

Frizz,

If it doesn't accept the EAN code - and are you including all the chars now? Not just the ones that were being accepted with version 2 of DVD profiler..

If neccesary you ill have to contribute this new title using the Disk ID instead..

The check digit (last number 2) does not match with the code.

There is Check Digit Calculator in the following address for UPC codes. There you can enter the first eleven numbers and calculate what the check digit should be.
http://www.export911.com/e911/coding/digiCalc.htm

Of cource the actual error could be anywhere in the code. If you had a working barcode scanner you could verify if the code match with the barcode.

There is of course now the question, what is the correct method to contribute this kind of DVDs which have illegal UPC/EAN codes. Obviously you can not contribute them with the code which is printed on the cover. What if the barcode gives a legal code with a scanner, can it be used?

Please post a picture of the UPC so someone can try to scan it.
The UPC is invalid according to the UPC-Database, but than I started puttin' a number in front and on 2-780273-072192 it says that this is a valid dummy-UPC, which I never heard before.

Is DVD Profiler trying to verify the UPC code using the user entered check digits, then refusing the UPC if the check digits don't match? If so, that should be changed to a warning message to the user to double check the UPC. It shouldn't outright refuse it. I could see there being packaging errors and I think this is along the same lines as onscreen credit misspellings or grammatical errors or misspellings in the overview. The UPC code in the DVD Profiler database should match the back of the DVD cover.

I don't know how it is doing the verifying... but it does stop the contribution telling us to check the UPC # again.... no way that I see to confirm it and have it go through.... meaning there is no way to contribute the title.

I don't know why but this issue of Nosferatu is in the database under the UPC 708273072198
It's the wrong UPC (8 at end instead of 2) but if you try and edit it, you get the error messages as frizz described.
Maybe we should ask Ken to change the UPC code?

unfortunately not, the UPC is to messed up by jpg. If you, or anyone else, have the DVD at hand scan only the white area with 200dpi and use a lossless format.

NO! Simply because a if it ain't valid, it isn't an UPC! There is still the possibility to contribute it with the discID.

hope this works...

Someone said contribute by disk ID, I realized I could do it that way when the upc wasn't accepted, and if need be will probably contribute it that way, but I really wanted to see if it could be added properly.

Unfortunately not, which means a) that this isn't a valid barcode or b) my cuecat is to dumb to read it.
Is anyone with a different barcode-scanner able to scan this UPC?

Flic won't read it either.  It looks like the check digit is just wrong.  Assuming it is, the correct UPC is 780273072194.  I'd say enter it under that.

I think there is something more wrong with the UPC. When I re-created the barcode using code 780273072194, the right hand side of the barcode becomes totally different from the barcode on the cover. I suppose that means there are several digits misprinted below the barcode. You can re-create the barcode eg. entering it into upcdatabase.com or use spacial font.

Unfortunately I was too unable to read the barcode from the picture above with my barcode reader. Maybe you could scan it once more (maybe with higher resolution) but use only black-and-white scanning setting instead of color or greyscale (unless you cannot get it read with a barcode reader).
