For this one both were changed, true.

For Shanghai Noon only the BY had to be added, as he is credited there correctly as "Simon Baker" (UPC 717951-010605) unlike "I, Robot" were he is credited as "Simon R Baker".

Shanghai Noon, at least the one I can vote on, has since been changed to:

Common name - Simon R. Baker
Credite as name - Simon Baker

But, as Skip says, who is to decide the common name without a standard?

What I wonder is if "Simon R. Baker (Simon Baker)" will become Simon Baker because of the number of "Credited As Simon Baker" entries outnumber his Simon R. Baker credits, won't both Simon Bakers become linked again? I am not sure I understand how Ken's tool is going to discern they are different people without the addition of birth years.

We are saying his common name is supposed to be SRB, but AIUI, Ken is going to search on the most common credited as name, which could potentially turn him back into SB. I suppose the tool will compare the name and credited as field both and hopefully notice that discrepancy.

Funny....

"Shanghai Noon" got approved (!) just now but in "I, Robot" the change was rejected. What now?

<Confused>

Now we will have:

"Simon Baker (1986)" playing in:
- Shanghai Noon

"Simon R Baker" playing in:
- I, Robot

"Simon Baker" playing in:
-The Devil Wears Prada
-The Ring Two
-Red Planet
-Ride with the devil

Cool

I have to agree with Skip.  The 'common' name should cover this.  'Simon Baker' and 'Simon R. Baker' are not the same name.

In my opinion Simon Baker could be Simon R. Baker and the other way around. I personally would think their the same.

Personally i would like to have birth years on all actors.

I don't know what you are looking at but I already covered this.  'Shanghai Noon' was approved with common name: Simon R. Baker.  There was no BY added.

I, Robot was declined so the name in those credits is still: Simon R. Baker.

I am speaking about "Shanghai Noon" UPC 717951-010605

Here "Simon Baker (1986)" got approved just now WITH A BIRTHYEAR

You are all looking at a different DVD version.

<thinking>
Anyway, according to the rules I could now theoretically propagate the change to all the other profiles based on the rule
Quote:
If the birth year change is due to an accepted change to another profile, indicate that.

I don't see what you are seeing, the user started with a BY, then changed it to Common Name. If it has been approved it is the Common name that got approved.

In all this debate, the rule regarding birth year still has not changed.

If the actor's name is Simon R. Baker but is credited as, that is what that field is for, I think you people are making this topic far more complex than it needs to be.

Sorry, no.  That is the version I am looking at.  pdf256 withdrew his BY contribution and made a common name contribution instead.

There are two Simon Bakers.  One, it seems, is always credited as Simon Baker.  The other one is sometimes credited as Simon Baker, and other times credited as Simon R. Baker.

Using the common name of Simon Baker, for the first, and Simon R. Baker, for the second, sure seems like the easiest way to solve this problem.  There is no need for a BY as there are two different names available.

But remind me again,, what to do about Michael J Fox Again.. ?

In his early pre Family Ties days his acting credits in Midnight Madness and the few that followed he chose the name Mike Fox..,  Do we or should add the birth year and credit him as Michael J Fox so with a tab of a keystroke we  can bring up all Michael J Fox titles at once and not split them up and we have to rely on our memory to flag and then do furthur searches ..

And this highlights why I keep saying steer clear of Common Name and BY BOTH for the time being. I think its marvelous that we have the new features, and I look forward to making use of them. But NO CRITERIA have been developed for Common Name handling, And as this thread demonstrates Common Name handling  CAN affect BY and vice versa. What it boils down to, right now, is that ANYTHING that you as a user choose to do in these areas is one of purely personal opinion and preference, which may oir may NOT coincide with other user's opinions and preferences. Ken is working on his plan and once we see what it is and how it will actually function, THEN we can sort it out.

I repeat again, I would not and will not personally, except in very RARE occurrences make use of this functionality. I have waited for THREE years to see it restored and I can wait a few more weeks to get it hammered out.

once again, to take a page from Skip...

Who is the one to determine the common name? There is NO standard so Common Name should not be used for ANY Simon Baker.

But, it seems Skip changed his tune on this issue.
