Ok, all is much clearer now, and you are pretty much right on all counts.

Although I am still curious about your assertion that MyMovies does it all like a charm. I don't see what magic they would have to overcome missing file associations (for IFO for example, which has nothing associated by default), unless they are messing with the registry directly - which I don't do as a matter of principle.

Oh, and as far as the innards of Profiler. We cannot discuss that outside the developers forum. So, even if you don't plan to actually write a plugin, perhaps you could get access to the forum to learm about the details and contribute your ideas.

MyMovies does it because I did do the file association! When I double click my IFO files, it starts WinDVD without trouble. So, I guess it just happens to work (I used the trial version only). I see no magic here.

I did not see the developers forum. Silly me! I just applied. We'll see what happens.

Well LoadDVD does exactly the same thing when the association is correct. At least, it works on my system. WMP plays the DVD when I click on the LoadDVD icon, or when I click on the file in windows explorer. I think you just didn't have the file associations set corectly when you ran LoadDVD. If so, I really don't think all that fuss about complications and how well some other program that you didn't want to buy does it, was totally unfair and not appreciated by me.
Thanks for your support.

I apologise if i have looked unfair this was neither what I meant nor what I was aiming at. I would just suggest that you re-read this conversation with the idea that I had no negative intention in mind.

I am sorry about that.

Ah well, easy to play the smart ass,  difficult to make things happen!

I'll show-off when I'll have achieved something of value.   In the meantime I'll remain quiet; quieter than I've been obviously; and you'll remain the boss!

Thanks for your help and your patience.

Cheers.

Hi again,

I'd like to go back to the initial subject. I have carried on with my tries and my problems with WinDVD. Here are the latest conclusions:

I have made an update of WinDVD 9. Since this update, it seems that the problems I had have gone. These problems were: erratic behaviour; very slow loading of files; no loading of files when path was containing spaces.

I have done some tests as well with VLC and VLC is working just fine.

Just for the sake of it I repost my PlayFromDisk.bat  :

if %7=="DVD" "C:\Program Files\Corel\DVD9\WinDVD" %6
if %7=="HD" "C:\Program Files\Corel\DVD9\WinDVD" %6
if %7=="BluRay" "C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\vlc.exe" %6

I'll run some more tests obviously but it seems that it is now working fine.    As I suspected, WinDVD was not innocent.
Maybe I should say that I also have associated IFO files with WinDVD in my system, but I did that even before having troubles.

A quick update after a few more days using LoadDVD in conjunction with WinDVD for player.

So far, it works fine but it is worth noticing that in many circumstances, there is a need to CLICK TWICE on the LoadDVD icon to get WinDVD actually launch the movie. The exact behaviour is the following:

* First click, WinDVD is launched if not already running. If WinDVD is already running, its window goes on top but often the film is not launched.
* Go back to DVDProfiler (don't rush), click again on the LaunchDVD icon. Surprisingly, this time, the WinDVD window does not come on top of all the windows, but it does launch the movie. You can follow that by leaving your mouse on top of the WinDVD icon in the taskbar. I recommend to not click on WinDVD in the taskbar until the film is actually launched. I also recommend that you start WinDVD before clicking on the LaunchDVD icon in DVDP. It creates far less troubles.

I suspect that Windows is messing up a bit here and so is WinDVD. But to be honest, all tests I have done with VLC show no trouble compared to WinDVD.

These instructions are valid for:
* Windows Vista Ultimate
* WinDVD 9 (with latest updates this day, without these updates it simply does not work!)
* DVDs ripped on hard drive with the VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS structure
* It also works with AVI, and WMV files launched with WinDVD. So, you can actually use DVDProfiler for managing your videos and start them even if they are not DVD formats! You can probably use it with any format that your media player is capable of reading.

I think that's all I can add today.

I hope it helps.

Cheers.

You are discovering some of the features that we announced over a year ago, and are discussed at length in this thread. Welcome to the party! Wonder how long it will be, 10 pages from now, we are pointing some person to your posts with "hey, didn't you read all those cool instructions posted a couple months ago by sliege ..."

I don't think there have been (m)any posts about WinDVD. Thanks for adding to our arsenal of tips and hints.

Well, I made searches about WinDVD and other issues I had, and I could not find what I was after. Maybe I screwed up in my search and the keywords I used. In such case I might not be the only one to do so.
I don't remember reading anything about the clicking twice. That double clicking made me think that your plugin had some issues when in fact I now believe it does not have. Because of it, I wasted your time asking useless questions. So, my hope was to contribute in such way that next users might not bother you as much as I did. The bit regarding the use of other formats than DVD was not a surprise. Maybe I should not have added that bit... I just try to balance asking questions and contributions.

Getting tired of reading all this.  I'd love to be able to target the exact part of this 35+ page thread which deals with ISOs but the forum search mechanism is not that elegant.  It only points me to page 1 of this thread and not the page dealing with my search results.

That said ... same old question as I see over and over again.

* In the "Location: fields I put the word "file" .. you should edit your instructions on page 1 step 3 to make this crystal clear or people will keep asking you ... this is one reason why this thread is unreadable because it is glutted with people asking that very same question over and over

* In the "Notes" section, I put "[filepath]"A:\2001.iso"[/filepath]"

* When I click on the LoadDVD toolbar, I get the dialogue "No application is associated with the specified file for this operation"

* When I type "A:\2001.iso" into the DOS CMD prompt, the movie fires up in PowerDVDHD no problem.

Why isn't LoadDVD working?

It is amazing how people start off with rude comments and then ask for help. So what if you had to do some reading. Poor baby. I spent hundreds of hours to give you something free. If you got nothing, then you got what you paid for. If you think you can make a better explanation, then why don't you do so, and I will use it. That would be a positive contribution.

If you are using the latest version of LoadDVD, then it should play ISOs with the file command. I don't understand your use of the "A" drive. Unconventional.

Also, I don't understand all those quotes you put into the filepath. Where did you read to do that?

By the way, the last person that reported thiis bug created his own thread to talk about it. I responded, then fixed it, realeased a new version. Do you think I even got a response ... nada. Plugins used to be fun, but I'm very close to withdrawing them all and finding more interesting things to do with my time.

VirtualCloneDrive VCDMount problem solved

PlayFromDisk.bat now has one and only one line:

"C:\Program Files\Elaborate Bytes\VirtualCloneDrive\VCDMount.exe" %6

For each movie I put the word "play" in the "Location" field and the text "[filepath]x[filepath]"

x is simply the text representing the full path of the ISO.  x is not case significant nor does it need to be surrounded by quotes in the event it contains a space or special characters.

For example I have "[filepath]m:\fifth element.iso[/filepath]" in DVDProfiler Notes while Vista shows the path to be "M:\FIFTH ELEMENT.iso".  Strangely, this all works regardless of the case.

Now, when I click on the DVDLoad toolbar, the movie fires up in PowerDVDHD.

mediadogg ... sometimes people are just complaining but it doesn't mean directed at you ... they're just ... COMPLAINING !!!

OK, I've done some more work on PlayFromDisk.bat.  First, a few assumptions:

. I have VCD (SlySoft VirtualCloneDrive installed)
. I have added usb drives to hold all the ISOs
. All the ISOs are stored at the root level of each usb drive
. ISOs do NOT have spaces or special characters
. ISO filenames are NOT longer than 25 chars

That said I changed PlayFromDisk.bat to do the following:

. unmount drive L (this is the disk I have assigned to VCD)
. using %8 (remainder of Location field), I look at each possible drive (whether it exists or not) for a file called %8.iso
. the reason I look thru drives is because I sometimes move ISOs from one drive to the other
. if %8.iso is found at the root level of that drive, mount it with VCD
. because drive L is associated with VCD and now that the ISO is mounted, start PowerDVD ... on drive L:

Finally, from DVD Profiler, for each dvd/blu-ray in my library, I simply enter "play {filename}" in the Location field (ex; "play memento", "play TropicThunder", "play STAR_WARS_IV").  The movie title does not seem to be space significant.  There is nothing in the Notes section or any other section.  That is it.

Now, there are a few "opportunities for improvement".

. DOS - I wish there was a better way to "loop" thru possible drives
. DOS - For some reason, drives G thru J produce DOS ERROR 24 (abort, retry...).  So I took those lines out.
. DOS - Sometimes, PowerDVD starts before VCD finishes mounting the drive and displays a quick error message.  I just click "ok" and PowerDVD still loads and plays the correct DVD anyway.  However, the message is a bit annoying.
. Sometimes, in DVD Profiler, I make a typing error when typing "play {filename}" in the Location field.

Can anyone add improvements?  Is this a good start to aid people using Slysoft VirtualCloneDrive?

Well, when you complain in my thread specifically about words I worte about a program that I wrote, it is awfully hard to not take it personally. Being mindful of this, or simply saying "I'm sorry" will probably be more helpful to you later in life than attempting to make them understand why you insulted them.
