I need to put this in feature request if everyone thinks it is a good idea.

What about the update process checking to see if any cast or crew member being updated in the local db has any links already set up.  If it does, have the option to accept the update and add the info from the update to the credited as field preserving the link.  This way it would not matter.

What is the standard that Ken has come up with?

He has talked about it, Boykin. he has NOT unveiled it yet. And I believe a Feature request is already in the hopper on this.

@tlevel...true enough, and there are times when I wish we could be more selective in cast and crew BUT the workload this would put on Ken and Gerri I think for now would be far to big, this may be something we can get to in the future, as Ken is able to bring employees on board. Unless he wanted to use volunteer users to help in the process.

I am talking about updates that have already been approved.  When a user accepts the profile, DVDP would check for links and if any were fould then put the downloaded actors name in the credited as field instead of overwriting the llinks.  Other than the programming, this would not put any burden on Ken or Gerri.

This way it would not matter what a user has set up locally.  The profile would be updated with the correct "as credited" actor in the "credited as" field.  If an update has a credited as actor, then just update the credited as field and not the main name and not break the links.

I am not sure that is true, it might be, but since I don't have access to the code ofr Ken's data model, I won't make the categorical claim that it is.

I know several users have also made the request that only the credited as field be updated and the common name be kept locally.  There may already be a request like this in the feature request forums.

But, like Skip says I don't know what kind of program changes would be required.

I absolutely agree, Unicus and have said this repeatedly. One partial solution to this is to be sure you indicate in your notes the the linkage came from somehwere else int he database, as we have no way at this time to figure that out. That is one thing Ken should try and provide, if a link has been created we need to be able to see where it originated and the documentation that accompanied, if any. But more importantly its all about standards and crieria so we are all on the same page.

The best way to stop it until its ready for prime time is for Ken to turn the damn thing off.  If you CAN'T enter the stuff, it won't mess up the database.  And yeah, I can hear the howls of protest from the usual suspects even as I type.

That is the only true way to stop it in my eyes John... but Ken has yet to decide to do that. Unfortunately all we can do at this time is recommend it to him.

I think you guys are the only ones that don't want it used.  Here are the reasons for some no votes on Alpha Dog.

t001z    Butch is a Nickname; for consistancy sake, should use "Credited As" because there is no doubt  this is the same person.

Reverend    "Butch" isn't the middle name, it's a nickname. Use Credited As please.

CubbyUps  No Still Gallery, Use credited as for Barry, Xan Cass., & others

8ballMax  Butch is his nickname...use credited as. The Witness Gallery is not a photo gallery.

bbursiek  use credited as

Even though the rules say this about nicknames:  If an actor's credited name includes a nickname, highlighted by ", ’ or ( ), list it in the middle name field. For example John "JS" Smith, John ‘JS’ Smith or John (JS) Smith.  The man was listed as Avram Butch Kaplan with no " "or () so I profiled it as credited with Butch in the middle field.

Until we have some standards and criteria you have to accept the No votes. It makes no difference what you think, what I think or what anyone else thinks, they are valid. Is it James Stewart or Jimmy Stewart, yo think it should be James based on whatever and I think it should be Jimmy based on mine and some other user may believe it to be Jim based on his. Who ois right? All of them. It's not a question of not WANTING it used or not WANTING to use it, its a question of it simply isn't ready for use until we have standards and criteria.

In the meantime, if you just have to go hunt gold, then don't complain about anybody's NO votes. Put a different and more aggressive way who died and made you the ultimate determinator of what the Common Name should be. Answer NO ONE, nor did anybody appoint me( and I would not accept it anyway) or any other user.

That's an awkward one, cos if you weren't aware that Butch was a nickname, how else were you supposed to profile it?
If you already have a Avram Kaplan or a Avram "Butch" Kaplan in your database (or any other variant), I would use that entry and use "credited as" for the Avram Butch Kaplan bit. That would at least preserve some linking as you're using an entry already in the database rather than adding a new, unlinked one.

You must have misunderstood my post or you are arguing both sides of the fence one.  I have people in this thread saying I should not use it and I am getting no votes because I did not use.  I did not use the as credited field on any of those actors.  Most of them were not in my local DB.

If your following the rules with your contribution and getting no votes because a voter is voting there personal preference, don't worry about it.  It doesn't mean that your contribution still won't be approved with No votes.  Screeners will look at your contrbution and the contribution notes you made as well as the No votes.  If it does get declined just resubmit and make sure your contribution notes are clear.

If your contribution is following the rules the ones voting No should either be voting netural or voting yes putting in comments how they would like you to handle the contribution.

Ifor one have been voting neutral on ones using the common name at this point... the way I see it... the rules say clearly to use it so I can't vote no.

There is a difference between 'should not use it' and 'don't use it'.  I don't believe we should be using it because different people are applying different standards.  We should have one standard that everyone can use.

The problem with my thinking is, it isn't supported by the rules.  The rules say you can use it and don't require a standard.  Basically, the rules have given everyone permission to do what ever they want.

Some users want it used, I don't care what they say or what they vote, if they are voting based on Common Name, I completely ignore them. I will not use it until such time as Ken supplies a standard for us. If a user chooses that he wants to use it, I will not for Yes for it, nor will I voet No, unlesss Ithere is another reason to. I will either not vote at all or vote neutral.

And yes I agree with Unicus thinking 100%
