Hello all,
I currently use Ant Movie Catalogue but I am looking to switch to a program that better suits my needs. Specifically better information import capabilities, importing a broader scope of information, better GUI, etc. After researching this all morning I am considering using DVD Profiler. I would appreciate any and all comments on DVD Profiler. Why do you use it? What makes it better than other apps? What are the highlights of the program? Etcetera. I also have a couple of very specific questions. Will I be able to import my current catalogue consisting of (Ant) into the app?  Does this application work for music CD's or MP3 collections?  Thank you all in advance for your input.

no CD's or MP3 only DVD.
you can download and try the program for free. Only limit 50 dvd's
Sources for one or more of the changes and/or additions were not submitted. Please include the sources for your changes in the contribution notes, especially for cast and crew additions.

The user-build database. All other solution use datascraping as far as I know, and no matter how clever they do this, it can't beat the database with controlled entries.

As for your specific questions, importing current catalogues is a weak point, whereas exporting is well supported. That is actually very strange, since I can not think why anyone would want to switch away from DVD Profiler. The second question: the program supports DVD, HD-DVD and BluRay.

Thanks to all of you who posted serious replies.  Mithi mentioned "datascraping" and controlled entries. Can anyone elaborate on this? I am not familiar with this concept since currently I use script(s) to pull data from existing DB's such as IMDB, Amazon, etc.

Everyone who posted seems to love the program but with one or two exceptions no one pointed out program features that sets DVD Profiler apart from other CDDB/DVDDB's. I would like to hear some specific likes/dislikes. Thanks again.

I admit I haven't used many programs as I found the program relatively early in my search but I love it because it's easy to use...just type in the barcode and at least 95% of the time, there's an entry for it.  The other 5%, you can enter yourself to get the information out there for others.

The program is continually being updated by the users for a more accurate database every day, if not more often.  You can help with this as much as you want or as little as you want...it's a user built database, but there are a LOT of people that regularly contribute.

In one location, it keeps track of how many DVDs I have, how much I paid for it, where and when I got it if for some reason I need to replace it.  If I decide to lend DVDs out, who it goes to.  It has graphs and tables if you want to keep track of information that way.  If you want to quickly see who that actor was or who the director is, it's there...  Debating on whether or not the extended version of a certain title is worth it?  Profiler will tell you what is on that version as opposed to the bare bones version.  Keep track of when you watched that movie and how much you liked it and how much you liked the DVD itself...fond of the movie but not the extra features?  You can keep track here.

I don't have the mobile version as I don't have a device that would support it, but I wish I did b/c I know that I have trouble in stores: did I buy that already or is it one on my wish list?

You can enter in DVDs that you've created yourself (though those stay in your own local database, rather than being released publicly).  Have a large collection?  You're able to print out reports with the information about the DVD that you want on it to put in a binder for easier selection.  You can also upload your list to the site and have access from other computers.

A relatively new feature is the headshot ability.  You can attach photos to the people in the cast (and crew) list so you can tell what they look like.

If you haven't already, I do reccomend downloading and trying it out for a bit.  As long as you don't have more than 50 DVDs entered, you have almost full use of it for trial.

You can't beat the price.  For a one time fee, you get access to not only this version but future versions as well.

Hope this helps a bit...

the main problem with data scraping (which is essentially what you do by using scripts to pull data) is that these databases have "poison" data in them... purposely incorrect data inserted into their records to identify theft. so firstly... your data is incorrect, and secondly you open yourself up to possible legal issues. for this reason data from third party databases is not allowed in the Invelos database, we only use data credited from the disc.

as far as features go, you will not find a more complete, user friendly, dvd cataloging program anywhere - the amount of features is honestly too much to list, and now in the latest version the addition of plug-ins and html windows basically means that you can customize this program to do whatever you want (for the most part)

the use of in program filters allows you to find any disc you want instantly, the movie pick function helps you narrow down what to watch, which for those of us with large collections is a big plus, it is extremely easy to back up and export from, which makes it very safe and versatile, the users are extremely involved with getting new features implemented, by request, and beta testing.

customizable reports allow you to print or create documents in any range of basic text for personal use, strait to coffee table books for friends and family to see your collection.

charts and graph show you how much you've spent, how often you buy, what genres you have most of, what year of production you have the most of, etc etc etc

custom numbering available to conform to any requirement... number by release date, purchase date, or abc - also, mark Location and Slot for individual discs... excellent for keeping track of large changers or storage books.

keep track of when you and your family / friends have watched titles - see what titles you've watched the most

keep track of what titles you have loaned out and to who, and for how long....

current plugin/workaround developments from the user community include, importing thousands of head shots into your actor database, filtering movies by what awards they have won, and exporting your collection to a php site if you own your own domain, which allows for near unlimited configurations for displaying your collection online to others....

custom layouts for all resolutions and screen set ups

custom reports made by users for users

keep track of owned , ordered, and wishlist

keep track of SRP and price paid

i think i just ran out of steam... but that was off the top of my head without even opening the program...

download the free version and give it a try with 50 dvds... see how u like it.

I've been using it since Spring 2000, I've been jacking hardware, firmware and software for 48 years.
If wasn't the best for my needs, I would have wrote my own as I did for jazz and classical CD and laser discs years pn my 80296- 80486.

The best new feature I like is multiple data bases. You can use it for other media just don't contribute the entries to the online dsata base. I use it to catalog college lectures I have on DVDs.

So the best thing for you to do is read all the entries on the web page and download it, enter a few DVDs, read the Help file, and try all the buttons, check the online data base.
We don't need stinkin' IMDB's errors, we make our own.
