Mithi mentioned "datascraping" and controlled entries. Can anyone elaborate on this? I am not familiar with this concept since currently I use script(s) to pull data from existing DB's such as IMDB, Amazon, etc.

datascraping = datamining = datapulling from sites like IMDB is a big NONO

from the rules:
The authoritative source for information submitted should be the DVD itself.  Please don't submit content from a third party database
Sources for one or more of the changes and/or additions were not submitted. Please include the sources for your changes in the contribution notes, especially for cast and crew additions.

Sounds like this guy is on a fishing expedition.  He's probably the creator of that program All My Movies that's getting clobbered in the Polls at moviegatherer.com   ...j/k.

Reasons I use DVD Profiler vs. the other guy’s cataloging software:

1: Ease of use.  DVD Profiler, IMO, is much more user friendly with a very good GUI.
2: Customizable layouts.  Awesome!
3: Data Entry. The ability to enter titles by UPC/EAN makes data entry a breeze. There’s even the ability to enter titles using a barcode scanner such as Cuecat.
4: Online Database. DVD Profiler, IMO, has one of the best, if not the best, user contributed databases of it’s kind bar none. Although the IMDb touts a huge catalog of films and credits, I’ve found much of their data to be questionable at best.
5: Customizable reports. Although I don’t use them very much anymore, it’s great to know I have the ability to publish that coffee table book if I want to.
6: Searching. So many ways to search for a title, cast or crew member, role played, it boggles the mind  .
7: Charts and Graphs. I stopped using those because once I saw how much I was spending, well, it scared me… lol.
8: Last, but not least, because the aliens told me to

It is starting to sound that way.  Tell him to come over from the dark side of the force to the good of DVD Profiler.

Why use DVDProfiler? Simple answer...because it is the best, nothing else is even CLOSE and I have tried them all.

Why use DVD Profiler?

According to the DVD Profiler Icon Tooltip it's:

"The best way to catalog your DVD addition" (without the letter c)

I forgot how I found DVD Profiler to start with. I been using it for like 3 years or more  It is easy and with 3.0 also so fun to use. Now that I got trailer embedded with all my DVD's it is so freaking awesome plus HMTL windows are kewl as heck. No idea why it say May 10, 2007 under my name that was the day I upgraded to 3.0 but I used 2.0 for years before that.

Seem to be endless that way you can customize DVD Profiler.

Don't know about the rest of you, but this looks like a pure fishing expedition to me.
All anyone has to do is download, install and check it out to see all of the features available.  Like myself, I tried at least three others back in 2001 when I chose DVDP and it was clearly far superior to everything else out there then as it is now.  Just for the record, I do hold license to two other catalog programs but prefer DVDP because of its ease of use and overall features.

Actually I'm just a guy with a growing DVD collection. I checked out All My Movies, as well as a couple of other programs before ending up here. As a Network Administrator I don't install any trial software without asking a few questions. Thanks to all of you who gave some thought to my questions and thank you for taking the time to post your responses.  Invelos  is fortunate to have some intelligent customers who were willing to provide me with quite a few solid reasons for using this program. In addition I appreciate the insight into datascraping. I'll post back after I've given it a go. Thanks again

Like the interface, especially like the customizable interfaces. Does anyone know how to import?  If not this is a major drawback. I have approximately 1000 DVD's catalogued in another program and so far it seems I need to add all of them manually one at a time. Thanks in advance

You can buy a CueCat for about $10 or so and scan the UPCs in for your collection. That is probably the easiest way to add a large collection.
