My TV isn't full HD, but only HD ready. Does anyone know if it would be better to set the upscaling dvd output to 1280x720p as opposed to 1920x1080i?

HD Ready just means there's no built in HD Tuner!!! It's still a HDTV.

Not here in Europe. What is advertised here as HD Ready means the screen can do 780p or 1080i, not 1080p.
@ cvermeylen: you'll have to try what works best with your screen: 780p or 1080i.

I currently set my DVD to 720p. I think it is slightly better, but the difference is very marginal.

From what I hear, this is quite often the case.

Enjoy!
