I just did my first contribution to the DVD Profiler database and as I meticulously went through each field in each tab, adding information,  I asked myself the question:  why can't the software automatically import the information fields from IMDB or Amazom?

I use a piece of software for MP3 tagging called Tag and Rename by Softpointer and it allows you to add all the ID3 tag fields from Amazon.com, Amazon.ca, Amazon.co.uk, etc. with a few easy clicks.  You can download it for a free trial to see what I am talking about, it's really very simple.

This feature would eliminate all the needless manual data entry, subsequent errors, duplication, and allow the user to update his/her collection efficiently and get on with enjoying the movies.

Forgive me if this has already been suggested, but please give this serious thought because it will save the whole DVD Profiler community 1000's of man hours :-)

Wow, this idea is about to get destroyed but I'll attempt to be nice about it.  The first problem is that there are legal issues with scraping data from another website for your own (Invelos) commercial use.  The second issue is that IMDB data, at least for uncredited cast/crew, is one of the biggest loads of crap out there.  Not much point in pulling in a bunch of garbage that will only have to get fixed later.

It has been asked about... actually many times before.... but it is not going to happen. I guess I should say it is extremely unlikely it will happen. Mainly because IMDB owns it's database and there is legal ramifications to scraping the data from such a site. There is a way by purchasing a license to do so from them... but then the program itself will take a hit... and cost more. Probably even cost a monthly fee.

That isn't even touching on the fact that from doing it the way we do we learn just how bad IMDB is littered with wrong information... taking the info directly from the DVD the way we do we are getting a more accurate  database.

For good reasons (e.g. threat of legal actions) the rules forbid to import data from other databases like IMDB!

For more informations concerning IMDB and others, please use the forums search and have a look at the contribution rules. Here you'll find sufficient informations about this issue!

Last but not least: What could be more reliable than to take all credits from the dvd's?

To provide a quote from the IMDB page you just have linked to:
Quote:
Linking to IMDb: You are granted a limited, revocable, and nonexclusive right to create a hyperlink to the IMDb site so long as the link follows our linking guide and does not portray IMDb, its affiliates, or their services in a false, misleading, derogatory, or otherwise offensive matter.

The legal arguments made in this thread regarding data scraping are of course correct.

Skip,

You slam IMDb and then post a link to a page on IMDb that says that your link to IMDb pages is OK if it "does not portray IMDb, its affiliates, or their services in a false, misleading, derogatory, or otherwise offensive matter".

After Matthias points out that you have violated the site license as outlined on the page that you linked to, you want to give him a negative vote.

I didn't slam them.. I stated a FACT and one which I can DOCUMENT many thousands of times. Nice try!!!!

They have started to try and improve themselves even installing some Rules which sound striking familiar, I don't envy them their task, as they have much further to go than we do.

Thing is, it can be a fact and still be derogatory, or otherwise offensive.

True. Plus I doubt "IMDB is also the single most inaccurate data source in the world" is a fact. And even if it is, how would it be proven?

There is no way in hell that you could prove your claim that "IMDB is also the single most inaccurate data source in the world". You can show that they are full of errors, so is the Invelos database, so are lots of others. So what?

I would never tell other users to use IMDb as their main source for data, but it has its uses.
