Didn't know how else to describe this, but I'm working on a TV series and was wondering if I should include the art director (or any other crew member) under something like "New York Unit". In this one instance, the art director for the NY Unit is in the database and that person has worked before (in my collection it was a feature film).

So, do I include crews in other location units?

IMHO: no unit crew whatsoever. Read last week's thread on the matter.

The rules (see the link Giga Wizard provided) specifically prohibit entering unit directors and unit directors of photography/cinematographers. However, the rules don't specifically mention unit art directors or unit sound mixers - this "oversight" has lead to some people entering those. But to me, it's clear that we just don't track unit crew - after all, why would I want to track a 2nd unit sound mixer when I can't track a 2nd unit director? I've said it many times before, and I'll say it again: either we track them all, or we don't. But not only a seemingly random segment of the unit crew. IMHO, by specifically excluding unit directors and unit cinematographers, the intent of the rules is not to track unit crew. It seems logical to extend that intent to unit art directors and unit sound mixers as well.

However, instead of having to discuss this again week after week, it would be helpful if Ken or Gerri could chime in and settle this one way or the other, preferably through a quick update to that credits table. I can't help but feeling that so many recurring topics could be laid to rest if only Invelos would act on threads like this...

I personally wouldn't add them, or any unit crew.

I think the rules need to be updated and clarified, as the only instances for not using a "Unit" credit are "Unit Directors" and "Unit Photographers"

that thread say's nothing at all. Look at the credits section of the rules. And you see in the table for the art section to include Art Director and no notes like for the direction section what would limit it to the principal art director only.

The general consensus is that no unit crew is to be used, inferring that by extending the no unit directors and no unit photography from the crew table. There are people who will argue that, since they are specifically not excluded they should be added, but in this poll the overwhelming majority voted for no unit crew.

"Unit" crew have always been excluded from DVDP.

Why does this keep coming up?

I would agree on 2nd unit, not on location units. 'Tora Tora Tora' where you had 4 Art Directors, 2 American 2 Japanese, as 2 crews (one US, one JP) made this movie.

I don't know if that was a valid poll as the question there was:
What, if any, unit crew should be used with dividers.

you should edit your title and drop the secondary unless the location unit was credit as beeing a second unit. I've seen credits with several location units and then second units to those location units.

I would like to see location units, but not second units. But, I'm affraid there'd need be a rule change for that to happen.

I can't edit the thread title...

And to be more specific, I'm working on Monk: Season Three and it just says "New York Unit". No other units and AFAIK, this is the only time with another unit like this for the season (still going through, so maybe there are others)

I agree on 2nd unit, i have problems with location units, you can have 2 full crews working on productions, 1 in this country (city), 1 in another.

yes you can, when you go to your first post, in front of the title is an with that you can edit the title. you don't have to but it would make it clearer that we are not talking about 2nd units but about location units.
