I was just wondering why so many contributions seem to differ from each other for the same title.

I mean, if everyone was up to date (which I assumed they would be) then everyone should have pretty much matching profiles for the same title apart fom any locked/personalised data. Yet the number of contributions I've made (which turn out are now in the ddatabase from yesterday/day before) that differ from the contributed profile is enormous...

For example the last two I did in my local data (which matches the IVS database) I had a different title, overview, studios and more when compared to the one submitted to the new database.

I've checked and that version was older than November 2005 so people really lock down data that much and ignore updates once they're vaguely happy? Why are so many out of date profiles being submitted?

Becasue the first day or so was a free-for-all, and many of us - myself included - just dumped our collections into the new database. Plus, there have always been disagreements on certain things, which have carried over.

There's going to be some unhappy campers, and there will be some work to do over the next weeks and months.

You kinda answered your own question.  There are people who didn't follow the rules and quite a few who haven't updated in ages...I think I remember Mark saying he hadn't updated since 2.4.

Those people...not you Mark...are now submitting profiles and, because we can't vote on them, are getting their versions into the DB.  It is going to take a while to fix this.  I am taking notes and will start to contribute corrections once the inital storm is over.

That is correct.  My profiles are horribly outdated, but I at least have the good sense not to contribute them.   My only contributions so far have been a few that I added just recently.  I'm probably the only owner of them.

I thought my stuff was pretty good and it was only afterwards that I remembered I had some "personal preferences"  in some profiles that are horribly anti-rules. As server time permits, I'll make amends.

I started going through my 2428 updates last night and was annoyed to find that many of them have detected no difference or there is nothing indicated as being changed.  What's up with that?

I attempted to NOT contribute anything that I had that was not according to the rules, but some may have slipped through. If anyone see something terribly wrong that I submitted please PM me and I fix and re-submit.

Same goes here, Rick, I have seen a couple of small things which need polishing which I expected but generally speaking things appear to be in good order. There are a couple of users who have demonstrated a problem with conforming with the Rules, but they are well known to me from the past, and I shan't be bothered with naming. So far...well done everybody.

And i am sure there may be a few rough spots in some mine, I'm not perfect.

Yea, that is my only complaint so far.  Some of my updates are profiles I submitted so there is obviously no change...but they show up anyway.

I am now finding some where the difference is undetectable.  For example existing title: '24: Season One' new title: '24: Season One'.  There is no change but it is showing as a change.

i thought i was losing my mind last night. only had 79 differences, but--and as much as i hardly ever ever disagree with the skipper--75% of those were horrendous. and it looked exactly like someone above me (in the post...we allow no one above him) was submitting all the things they couldn't get away with when people could vote. i would have pulled my hair out, but at my age that's not a really good method of expressiong utter frustration.

i am now going to take many deep breaths and give the world some time to calm down...

none of this, of course, detracts from the fact that all of us here (meaning inside his head) simply adore the new update, the new look of the site, and just about every other gosh darn thang...

An update always shows up when there is a new version in the database of a title you have (even if you submitted it, as Lithurge points out). Basically someone is contributing a title identical to your local one (which I'd expect if it was the latest version from the old IVS database) and Profiler is telling you that it's in the new database now.
