This is an attempt to clarify the "common name" of editor Dan Hanley / Daniel Hanley / Daniel P. Hanley. For the eternal non-believers, I'll start with a few sources that confirm that these name variants indeed refer to the same guy:

- http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0360067/

Also a good read is this interview:

Unsurprisingly, the IMDb-name ("Daniel P. Hanley") has the largest number of entries in our database, containing IMDb-mined entries for almost ALL titles Mr. Hanley was involved in, regardless of how he's actually credited in them. Instead, I've re-checked all his entries in my own collection, and I've compared the credit lookup tool results for all three name variants. It seems Mr. Hanley has 23 different titles in the entire Invelos database:

DANIEL HANLEY (11 titles):
- Armed and Dangerous
- Backdraft
- Cocoon
- Cop and A Half
- Gung Ho
- Far and Away
- The Paper
- Parenthood
- Pet Sematary
- Problem Child
- Willow

DAN HANLEY (10 titles):
- Apollo 13
- A Beautiful Mind
- Cinderella Man
- Dr. Seuss' How The Grinch Stole Christmas
- EDtv
- The Da Vinci Code
- In & Out
- Laverne & Shirley: The Fourth Season
- The Missing
- Ransom

DANIEL P. HANLEY (2 titles):
- Night Shift
- Splash

So, as of yet, it seems that "Daniel Hanley", with 11 different titles, is the common name for now, although "Dan Hanley" is very, very close, which may or may not result in a common name switch at some point in the future.

I'd be tempted to use Dan Hanley on the basis that most of his more recent credits are with this name, whereas the other titles are older. So that suggests he's currently using Dan Hanley and so it's more likely we'll get extra credits under Dan Hanley than the other names.
If you're patient enough you could wait until Frost/Nixon and Angels & Demons are released and see how he's credited in them...

I'm afraid I'm not a patient man - I want to link these credits together right now! - but I'm happy to re-visit my profiles if or when the common name changes. By nature, the "most-credited form" is evolving, so this situation is far from unique. We'll just have to deal with it when the times comes, IMHO.

We know that is true.  I would stick with what the Rules say relative to Common name unless you can prove otherwise. as for possible changes in the future, Ken has implied that onec set theprocess becomes automatic meaning that any change one way or the other would be handled by the system without further input from us.This looks like a good test name.

Huh, I missed that implication regarding automatic changes.  Must have been in a thread I wasn't reading.  Generally speaking though, that gives me cause for concern.  One day I can get an update with 30 changes all because the system decided to bounce a name.

Maybe from Ken's point of view the process becomes automatic if we all provide the input?

The only statement Ken has made is that the Credit Lookup Tool results are automatically updated when profile changes are submitted. There has been no announcement about changing common names automatically. That is still up to us via submission.

Northbloke is right: Ken has never implied anything like that. Think about it: how could "the system" possibly start shifting common names in each of our local databases, "without further input from us"?!

That would actually be very simple to do, Tim.

I'm afraid not, but it really doesn't matter - at least I can assure you that it's currently not happening.

For the record, I thought I'd confirm that Mr. Hanley's common name has indeed shifted from "Daniel Hanley" to "Dan Hanley" - indeed largely thanks to his recent 'Frost/Nixon' and 'Angels & Demons' credits which weren't in the database yet when we last talked about this. Also, some major clean-up has resulted in the fact that, unlike the last time around, the CLT no longer happily declares the IMDb-mined-but-hardly-ever-used "Daniel P. Hanley" name variant as the winner. Current CLT numbers:

Dan Hanley: 20 titles,
Daniel Hanley: 15 titles,
Daniel P. Hanley: 3 titles.

Corrected for obvious errors, the actual CLT-spread is this:

DAN HANLEY (13 titles):
- Angels & Demons
- Apollo 13
- A Beautiful Mind
- Cinderella Man
- The Da Vinci Code
- Dr. Seuss' How The Grinch Stole Christmas
- EDtv
- Frost/Nixon
- In & Out
- Laverne & Shirley: The Fourth Season (unconfirmed)
- The Missing
- Mork & Mindy: The Second Season
- Ransom

DANIEL HANLEY (11 titles):
- Armed and Dangerous
- Backdraft
- Cocoon
- Cop and a Half
- Gung Ho
- Far and Away
- The Paper
- Parenthood
- Pet Sematary
- Problem Child
- Willow

DANIEL P. HANLEY (3 titles):
- Mork and Mindy: The First Season (unconfirmed)
- Night Shift
- Splash

The Dilemma: Dan Hanley
My one wish for the DVD Profiler online database: Ban or remove the disc-level profiles of TV season sets. It completely screws up/inflates the CLT.
FACT: Imdb is WRONG 70% of the time! Misspelled cast, incomplete cast, wrong cast/crew roles. So for those who want DVD Profiler to be "as perfect as Imdb", good luck with that.
Stop adding UNIT crew! They're invalid credits. Stop it!

Current CLT numbers:

Dan Hanley: 18 titles,
Daniel Hanley: 15 titles,
Daniel P. Hanley: 7 titles.

Corrected for obvious errors, the actual CLT-spread is this:

DAN HANLEY (15 titles):
- Angels & Demons
- Apollo 13
- A Beautiful Mind
- Cinderella Man
- The Da Vinci Code
- The Dilemma
- Dr. Seuss' How The Grinch Stole Christmas
- EDtv
- Frost/Nixon
- In & Out
- Jonah Hex
- Laverne & Shirley: The Fourth Season (unconfirmed)
- The Missing
- Mork & Mindy: The Second Season
- Ransom

DANIEL HANLEY (11 titles):
- Armed and Dangerous
- Backdraft
- Cocoon
- Cop and a Half
- Gung Ho
- Far and Away
- The Paper
- Parenthood
- Pet Sematary
- Problem Child
- Willow

DANIEL P. HANLEY (3 titles):
- Mork and Mindy: The First Season (unconfirmed)
- Night Shift
- Splash

Note that it's cringe-inducing to see that since my last update, the CLT number of IMDb-name variant "Daniel P. Hanley" has increased from 3 to 7 titles - not because any new "Daniel P. Hanley" credits have surfaced, but because people are still, to this day, submitting IMDb-mined data... This includes profiles that I had actually worked on myself at some point in the past, which actually were completely "as credited", and which now have been overwritten by IMDb-mined data by users claiming "Completed and corrected Crew and cast from film end credit list" in their notes. That's the state we're in, unfortunately...

See above: it's getting worse by the minute. Virtually non-existing IMDb-mined name variant Daniel P. Hanley is now up to 12 titles, while there are really only two titles (I've since been able to verify that Mr. Hanley isn't credited in previously unconfirmed title 'Mork and Mindy: The First Season', so that one has been eliminated). This means that people are still submitting IMDb-mined data into the database. I'm noticing that in this specific example, it's virtually all coming from one specific Spanish user. I've tried contacting him: no luck there, and whenever someone tries to correct his IMDb-mined data into "as credited" data, he consistently votes "no", and tends to get abusive when you point out that IMDb-mined is not allowed. What can we do to stop this user from messing up the database and the CLT numbers like this?

Next step is to report it directly to Invelos it does violate the rules both contribution and voting wise and they have to power to revoke voting abilities.
