I will just put in my dvd collection by hand from DVD Spot in the next couple of days or so.  But if someone comes up with a way to export my entire collection from DVD Spot without having to type in each title, please post it here!!  Btw, I was on DVD Spot and will miss it, but am looking forward to being here!!

one of the time saving things I did, was to export my collection data and save it as an excel spreadsheet. The exporting doesn't grab all your specific when watched data, but it does grab: <li>UPC</li><li>Title</li><li>custom title sort</li><li>rating</li><li>review (I'm glad of that)</li><li>source (where you bought disc if you used that category)</li><li>Price</li><li>owned (if marked owned it has a "1")</li><li>Owned date (this one is a little screwy because if you left it blank there is a series of "0s" in date format, If you put a date the date is there)</li><li>Owned custom (If used)</li><li>watched</li> and <li>watch date (but only the last date watched, if you had multiple viewings that data will be lost unless you grab it by hand)</li>

Then what I did was clicked on "add to collection" opened the spread sheet and copied the UPC, went to Profiler pasted the upc (most of them are saved as 11digit codes you will have to add a "0" at the beginning of your number for the title to pull up) It saves a lot of title typing. Occasionally a number would be wrong so I'd look by title, all but 5 of my owned DVDs from DVDSpot are already here on Profiler of those 5 I recall 3 of them I had submitted to DVDSpot when I first got them, and the other 2 I had to add details I think and one of them a missing cover image.

Now I need to add some of my wish-list and eventually submit those 5 missing discs.

PLEASE, I implore you both and everyone else who might be tempted to join in, please don't make this into a flame war. At least not in this thread. We're trying to help those who are new from DVD Spot, and that will just be harder to do if this thread is bogged down by a bunch of posts not related to the new users.

Please.

I probably will never use the "movie picker" as I like to rely on my own watching decisions.

Fair enough, and I do the same the majority of the time, but sometimes I'm just in the mood to watch a movie, but not quite sure what. It's moments like that that the Movie Picker can be fun to use.

I'd suggest you at least take it for a spin. It may surprise you.

It's too late for klandersen since he already did this manually, but for everyone else:

If you follow klandersen's method as he posted above, instead of copying/pasting the UPC what you can do is distill your list to just a file containing all your UPCs, and then use the Import UPC plugin, which is available in the download section above.

Useful links:
- Instructions for how to use it
- The forum thread about the plugin

If all you care about is getting your titles onto here, then the above should work fine for you. I believe what mediadogg is working on is a plugin that will also include some of your individual data for each profile. I've PMed him to be sure though.

Just remember that plugins are disabled for free users (As Motel Hell currently is) if the collection is over 50 titles. Don't know how it will work with any of the 'import collection' plugins though.

If memory serves, the Movie Picker goes off of your recently watched movies and the "top billing" of the cast members.  Please note that "top billing" in this case means those who were in the first x credits and not the opening credits of the movie.  This could throw off the results if the main cast isn't credited first.

It's been argued in the past that the Movie Picker could be improved if there was a way indicate in the cast lists who was top-billed and who wasn't.

Hi. Correct on all counts. Here is the answer I sent you by PM: (corrected typos)

"Right, I agree. I know about the UPC plugin. I do in fact attempt to capture what little personal info is there, and make a mapping to owned/ordered/wishlist.

Also, I am using a locality guessing technique to reduce the number of rejected profiles during the refresh. That's is usually the major reason, if the UPC is correct.

I'm also an advocate of alternative ways to do things. So, I think it is perfectly OK to add another tool to the bag. Depending on the users preference, they can cut/paste from excel, use UPC Import, use BulkEdit to import from XML or CSV, or just do it manually with a cheap barcode or even text scanner."

@reybr - good thinking. I have already explored that question with other developers. We are not sure what happens during the import. I guess I could disable my key and test it. But the feeling is that regardless, once the profiles get in there, the limitations will be enforced. If memory serves, you can manually put more than 50 DVDs in the free version - you just lose a bunch of features when you do.

@Motel Hell

If I don't hit a major snag, I should be releasing the tool soon. As you get to know Profiler better, you will make your own decision about "Plugins". Since they are unofficial add-ons, some people don't use them as a matter of principle. But iif you want to give it a shot - I'll support you. I also agree with the other suggestions - if you don't have a lot of personal info, just blast in the UPC's. Later on you can add personal info manually, or using BulkEdit or one of the several Cast/Crew Editors, custom head shots - man are you going to have fun!!!!    (and it's all for just $30 ....)
Thanks for your support.

You are correct in that you can put in more than 50 DVDs, but when you do the plugins will stop working. it would be a bummer if the import just stops after the 50th DVD. That could be the point that stops people from converting from DVDSpot to DVDProfiler

How dare you, xrad. There are users here to fear but i am not the one. Yes, I will keepall of our noses to the grindstone as best i canwhen it comes to the Rules and I always strive for consistency, but fear, hardly. The people to fear are those who desperately try and shut up those they don't agree

The people to be afraid of are people like yourself who launch absolutely uncalled for clearly malicious attacks on other users.

Skip, you need to take a chill pill.  I don't see how I slandered anyone.  But if you feel slandered, I offer you my apologies.  By the way, you are the only one to ever have given me a negative reputation vote.

Ok, I already said you had a point. I don't know the answer yet, OK? Don't you think I will do whatever I can about it, if possible?

While I'm writing and testing code, perhaps you could resolve the matter by running a test? That would be helpful.

(1) Disable your key temporarily
(2) Run UPC import on a test file of greater than 50 DVDs
(3) Report results

Thanks in advance!
