Do we really want to go down this road if/when linking is introduced for studios?  Wouldn't it be easier if the data is already entered 'as credited'?  Sure seems like it would be...or am I missing something here?

What you miss is the filter by studio that allows to see all the profiles of your collection where a specific studio was implied.

The linking of studios already exists, and may be, for some users, as important as the linking of actors. That's why the "as credited" non written (in this case) rule would be as damageable as it is for credit names, and would have to be completed by a CLT for studios which would not work better than that about names...

Seems you just hit your finger, not the nail...

***edited for personal comment****

You simply don't understand that through As credited and WSIWYT we are laying the foundation for a database without peer, you are more interested in your imaginary data. It is hard to make the Rules any simpler than that, two simple premises that will ultimately lead to the data that you want to see, surfeur.

I repeat the challenge i laid down earlier, the Rules are based on two simple premises which are EASY for all to understand. I dare you to try it and for you to become the skip of france, I can guarantee everyone that if you take up the challenge and stop trying to create non-existent controversies or controversies which in some cases are ahead of the program, that one year from now you will begin to see a much more solid database and when Ken implements the improved link system ofr Cast?Crew and studios you will find that they will implement much easier and you will have YOUR data. Like I said two simple ideas, it can't get any easier, and they are the ideas the entire Rule system is built upon, try it I dare you, all of you, you will find that the native names will take care of themselves as will many of the other issues that are raised.

Surfeur:

You and others killed that horse a long time ago. I know that Ken is going to revisit the link system in some way, there are any number of approaches which he could take. In the past when I tried to share information i might possess users would make all kinds of nasty comments, and "you are not a spokesman for Invelos", so for quite some time now any specific information I might come across stays with me, I'll not reveal it, in any form, nor will I make any public comments on what I think might be in the offing or what i would do. I can only advise where we are in the process. You believe you know better but you don't grasp the picture and everyone wants to shoot around here, there and everywhere, with no real understanding of the damage they are doing. The best analogy that I can provide is that we are building a foundation right now, that foundation is based upon As Credited and WSIWYT, if we can properly fix the foundation then we will ultimtely build the Eiffel tower of databases, if we continue on the road we are on we will be lucky if we get past the third floor. I am not interested in tellin anyone what to do, but I am willing to use my own knowledge of database design and my experience to offer guidance and advice. Right now the adcvice is to keep building and repairing the foundation, so that we can build a strong structure. We have much to do to undo the damage that has already be done, but I really think if we focus on that part then when Ken does whatever he is going to do in revisiting the linking, we will be ready to move on to the next level, this includes the studios BTW. As credited and WSIWYT, then we can get more goodies of the kind you and I want to see...trust me.

Since Eiffel tower has three floors, I do not see the difference...

Not true, Cass. 20th is the logo, I can't recall an instance of an actual 20th Century Fox Credit, but there is Twentieth Century-Fox. All of these various names are important historically  and represent all sorts of changes in the company.

Yet with The X-Files, we're supposed to write it how it says in the logo and disregard how it's written in text. This makes no sense to me. While the history of studios includes names, I would think it would primarily include what movies they made (at least, all the film history books I have seem to concentrate on the latter), so an entry system that sacrifices linking seems rather wrong-headed. This really needs a programming fix. It should be much simpler than actors thanks to there being a lot fewer studios than people and general lack of different companies using the same name. A simple table would suffice for proper linking.

Ummm you are referring to the studio. I don't recall any discussions which said to use the logo in a very long time, in fact quite the opposite, my data reflects the As credited data not the logo data.

No it is not wrong-headed, Ace, it does demonstrate that you don't understand where we are and that the As credited will ultimately lead to a linked name, you are trying to put the cart before the horse. Stoptrying to run, you have to crawl first, then walk, then run. We will get there, Ace, all in good time.

Invelos, could you please implement a filter to automatically change Metro Goldwyn Mayer to Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer the same way you already correct Twentieth Century Fox?

I've been using this software for eight-and-a-half years. You'll probably keep saying "all in good time" for the next eight-and-a-half years too, but I'm afraid that doesn't really work for me.

It's pointless implementing an auto-filter.  It just affects one symptom of an issue but doesn't actually remedy the entire issue.

The whole thing goes back to the original design philosophy of the software.  By giving users complete control over the data, we are able to indivdiually tailor our databases to perform in the way we like.  Conversely, we have thousands of individual datasets out there that will never truly converge.

If it's important to you to be able to filter on MGM without having to search through the entire studio list for every possible variant on that studio, then you are "off the reservation" for studio data in the online.  Back to my point of the more users attempt to utilize the full power of the program, the further they are driven away from the community dataset.

Tim:

I am sorry if it doesn't work for you, but we aren't working on your timeline or one I would pick, but we are working on whatever Ken's timeline is and you, me nor anyone else can dictate that to ken. Live with it. Right now, my friend, you have the cart way out in front of the horse with the end result you are making a mess that we ALL will have to clean up.

I agree with you midnit. More auto-filters just dumbs down the database and robs it of power.
