No.  SDH is basically a special form of subtitles.

It does not require the equipment that is required for closed captioning.

"SDH" is an American term the DVD industry introduced. It is an acronym for "Subtitles for the deaf and hard-of-hearing", and refers to regular subtitles in the original language where important non-dialog audio has been added, as well as speaker identification, useful when the viewer cannot otherwise visually tell who is saying what.

No.  They serve the same purpose, but they do so in two different ways.  As I understand it, closed captioning requires a special decoder.  SDH is simply a subtitle option, so it is independent of the decoder.

So SDH would be entered in the subtitles menu, whereas closed captioning would get the checkbox.

CC is part of the NTSC standard, so it can't be used with upscalers, most PC players or PAL. DVD players hooked up by composite and S-video are becoming less common, so most companies have moved to SDH. A lot of transfers prepared for laserdisc, VHS or broadcast already had CC, so it made its way onto DVDs, but was never an ideal solution.

What's with the sudden urge to contribute these as Other Features?

SDH or not, they are subtitles and we have already have a field for that.

which field or area?  I used 'other Features' because that is what they are.. It is an 'accessible'  DVD feature built into the programing of the disc as a 'menu choice pick item or  feature, and to  bring this out for viewing..
Since there is no other area to bring attention to this feature it should be placed into Other Features ..

We have the feature, it's called subtitles.

The other field is not for dumping anything we don't currently track, if we would do that there would be no end to it.

SDH stands for 'Subtitles for the deaf and hard-of-hearing'.  Since they are subtitles, as indicated by the name, they should be listed in the subtitle field.  In addition, unless my memory is off, aren't these listed under the subtitle menu option on the DVD?

The rule for the 'Other Features' field states, "Use the Other free text box for Extras that do not have a specific indicator. Do not re-list extras here that are already indicated with the check-boxes."

While not ideal, SDH is already indicated with a check-box.  That means you can't list it in the other features field.

I have to agree... these should not be listed in Other Features. It is another area that DVD Profiler is not perfect... but it should be fixed with a feature request... not making due with the Other Features field.

Pardon? No we don't. If we had such a check-box, this whole thread would'nt have started.

Where? I find checkboxes for "commentary", "trivia" and "other", but not for "SDH".

I agree that SDH should not be listed in "other features", though.

Great,, then you won't mind if I use the Universal legacy series of the titles I currently own:
Deer Hunter,The Sting, Double Indeminity (both the 1942 and the 1974 discs), & To Kill a Mockingbird; all are encoded with SDH and are currently not CC, and are not properly subtitled either. So I can tick off all three languages for subtiles for this Universal Legacy set and I should get all yes votes.

@widescreen: Please explain to me why english subtitles for the deaf and hard-of-hearing are not english subtitles and thus you have to make it an "other feature" instead of checking the checkbox in the subtitle section?

I love when people don't bother to read the entire post.

Since you ignored it, I will repeat what I said...

SDH stands for 'Subtitles for the deaf and hard-of-hearing'.  Since they are subtitles, as indicated by the name, they should be listed in the subtitle field.  These are SUBTITLES, not 'other features'.

I don't own this set, however, if they contain SDH then you should utilize the subtitle feature to indicate the languages used.
