We've noted a large number of unecessary birth years in the accepted birth year database and have made some changes to prevent their propagation going forward:

- All existing accepted birth years for cast crew with only one accepted birth year have been removed.  This was the majority.
- Going forward, birth years will not automatically submit as part of cast/crew unless there is an exact previously accepted match by name and year.  Previously, the year was not considered, so once one year was accepted for an actor, all years were automatically submitted
- Going forward, all submissions which include a completely new birth year will automatically be promoted to 2nd level Invelos review.

To clarify the above, no profiles have been changed - only the list of previously accepted birth years has been changed.  The net result is you will see more birth years being listed in the contribution submission form, awaiting selection.

If you don't have specific justification for submitting the birth year (to differentiate between two known credited persons with otherwise identical names), then simply leave the birth years unselected.

Many thanks.
No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever.
There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom.
Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand.
The Centauri learned this lesson once.
We will teach it to them again.
Though it take a thousand years, we will be free.

Sounds great! Thanks.
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

Not sure, Ken. I may have an issue with what I bolded. There ARE going to be instances where we can obtain a BY for one John Smith but not for the other. If I am reading you correctly this possibility is a differntiator in and of itself becuaes we have ONE that has a BY. So aren't you removing the differentiator.

But conceptually at least, i agree.

The system as it works now will mix the person with a BY and the one without at profile update time. Both people need a BY to keep them apart. There also seems to be BY mixing if you restore your database from a backup file.

Well, if this is the case then using BY as the differentiator is a fatally flawed concept.  There have been innumerable instances where we could only find the BY for one of the people.  Fine by me if this is going to be cleaned up, but then we need to be given an alternate method to somehow separate these people that isn't dependent on hard to find personal information.  Frankly, we've needed a better method anyway.  I've already run into a few cases where the BYs are identical.

As far as I understand it, the birth years with only one accepted birth year were removed from the list of accepted birth years. Nothing is removed from the profiles. This was done to clean up the list (like removing the BY for Bruce Willis as an accepted BY). I don't see anything preventing them being contributed again with enough documentation.

I think this was a smart move by Ken!

Is it possible to have a checkbox and be able to add either a letter or a number to do the same thing as the BY attempts to do?

For example:
Chris Rock (a)
Chris Rock (b)
or
Chris Rock (1)
Chris Rock (2)

I don't see how we can document which letter or number appears in which movie. You would have to create a forum topic to add all movie titles to the correct letter. I fear this topic will become a few miles long very fast

Invelos could apply such information based on their own parameters, though I can see where it MIGHT get a tad awkward. I am sure the system used elsewhere is not determined by the users, that WOULD be a circus.
