Hi , I'm trying to choose which of these programs to use and I've looked at a good number of libraries and pretty much boiled it down to DVD Profiler and Movienizer.... one thing I noticed that left me with a big question mark is the fact that the last release of DVD profiler, v3.51 was in December 2008............. A year ago...  is there some huge update planned soon?

So far I like what i see... but its just that interesting comparison I wanted to point out sine Movienizer seems to be regularly updated... for example, having updates in September, October and December 2009....

I'd like to hear other peoples oppinions in general since it seems a number of other people have probably used the likes of Collectorz, All My Movies, Extreme DVD Organizer, etc,... especially if anyone else has moved from Movienizer to DVD Profiler...

Aside from that, one minor question... I noticed that the only search filter available from the toolbar is the TITLE filter... to filter my collection by any other field I have to use the tab (which is not intuitively located at all honestly) in the lower left corner of the interface.... Is there some way to make all of the filters easily selectable from the toolbar???????

I never used Movienizer so I can't talk on that... but I love DVD Profiler. It is the best collection program I ever used.

There is an update in beta now. Just not released to the public yet. Though paid members do have a link in the forum to try it out.

There is a load of filters available....

- General
--- Title
--- Other
--- Region
--- Rating
--- Running Time
--- Country of Origin
- Genre
- Features
- Audio/Subtitles
- Cast
- Crew
- Studio
- Tags
- Format

Once you go to filters you need to go to each tab in Filters to pick what you want.

Thanks for the feedback and good to know on the upcomming update... hopefully not too far away...
As for the filters, yes I did find all of those filters available but only ONE (the title filter) is available on the tool bar... all of the others are hidden away within the selection in the lower left corner...

While I don't believe you can put them on the toolbar (someone here can correct me if I am wrong about that)... but you can change the layout to make the filters visible. You can see many layouts that people have created HERE.

it is pretty easy once you get into it. Matter of fact I don't use any of the layouts that are supplied on that page. I basically just edited the standard layout to my liking. You can for the most part change the layout however you want. including not using windows that you have no use for and  creating html windows for stuff that isn't covered in profiler.

For example I don't care for the overview window that comes with profiler so I make my own overview window with an HTML window that has the title at the top... with a horizontal line break and then the overview.... with larger font.

I also have an html window for episode guides for the TV Series I own. and one to show the last watched date for each profile. Then Also have one for taglines.

Here is what my layout looks like...

Well, if one were a cynic one could speculate as to why this program needs to be updated so often.

The pivotal point in my opinion is the database of DVD Profiler in contrast to the mere data-scraping of the other programs.

wonderful :-)
One other thing, since you mentioned that you have used other software... I just thought I'd ask here if you have used the Collectorz.com Move Collector? I know there are a number of other posts around but I didnt want to start another holy war :-) I'm still leaning on DVD Profiler anyhow... but both programs have so many features and happily, both can find my box sets and different editions of movies when they are available..... forget Movienizer... its great but I went over some of the details again and realizing it was giving me a headache about specific editions and box sets.......

so just between DVD Profiler and Collectorz?

I didn't care for Collectorz as it downloads the info from sites such as imdb. But with profiler the profiles are created from the actual discs by the contributors (us) with the data being accurate to the actual discs.

Since when is IMDB a bad source of movie information?
For precise DVD edition data and so forth.. of course it isn't the right source (and well, sure this is a DVD collection software, LOL) , but as for MOVIE specific information, as opposed to disc... IMDB is great.... for example, IMDB has a fulll full cast and credits list.....

Mithi: touche, and you are right at least from that point of view.... but im sure you realize my question was really more directed as to what type of ongoing development DVD Profiler has..... maybe it's a part time project, or just a spare time project... for example......

In any case, I will most likely end up with DVD Profiler anyhow....

As for the Database... is ithe ONLY database the user created DVD Profiler database? or will DVD Pro search online using the likes of Amazon or other reputable and reliable sources? I have to go and look again.....

IMDB is FULL of bad information. For example, I was going through and auditing some cast and crew for a TV series today. I was using IMDB as a reference and comparing the IMDB info to the actual credits of the show. There were several cast members listed on IMDB that weren't shown on the episode credits and vice versa. This is not an isolated incident either. It's all over the place.

In DVD Profiler, the cast is listed in the order that they're shown in the film credits and titled as they are shown in the film credits. IMDB is very often off the mark on both counts.

I have Collectorz, but I've pretty much abandoned it. I used to use dvdspot for my online database. When it went under, I was looking for a new online database. That's when I found Profiler. It gives me a good online DB that I can share, but even better is the amazing local DB that is infinitely custimizable. Profiler completely blows Collectorz out of the water. Period. Another thing that irks me about Collectorz is that whenever they come out with a program update, you still have to pay for it if you want it. With Profiler, you pay once and all future updates are free. Plus, there's the support of these forums.

Goldrush:

IMDb is not just a bad source for data, they are the WORST. Now please allow me to explain a couple of points, their data is copyrighted and therefore legally we cannot use their data, secondly IMDb already exists, if the objective is to create a clone IMDb then what is the need for Profiler. Now as to why they are so bad, they have no consistency of data, their uses are basically allowed to enter the data in whatever form they wish, we say that there is only one source for the data and that is DVD/Film itself, the film credits listed EXACTLY as they are listed On Screen and in exactly the same order (Note: That in the case of Crew data it is list the data in the same order within each crew category). People cite IMDb as a wonderful reference which i don't understand since often their data is at odds with the data provided by the filmmakers...yet IMDb has NEVER produced any film...ever. They also provide no form of documentation for their data which we do through our Contribution notes, the notes are the bibliography of Profiler. We know, for example that many times the data on the back cover is simply niot correct, runtime may vary from what is actually on the DVD, sometimes what seems to be insignificant to other times quite significantly, I think the biggest differential I have ever seen was a 10 minute discrepancy between the back cover and the real runtime, that is why we say to use the disc whenever possible.

As Pete said, I think you will find that Profiler is far and away the most powerful and the most accurate database relative to the data that is provided by thiose involved in the actual production of any given movie that there is, and we are hopefully getting better every day.

Gentlemen,
Thank you for your enlightening feedback!
I had no idea there were such discrepancies with IMDB data...speaking from the lay man's perspective as you can already see that I am (at least in terms of using a functional DVD library software), I always felt that IMDB was good for general day-to-day information when you want to find out who played who in what movie... or find out more about an actor's filmography since we aren't all walking databases (well not me anyhow :-) , and especially if I wanted to know about a particular actor in the ensemble that wasn't a headliner...  those things being the case, I thought it was a good source to fill out specifically any missing parts of the cast list which are obviously not in places like amazon.com...

At any rate, I also definitely understand the inconsistency of data....though I never thought of it (or noticed) because I never looked to it as a source of information to mass-import data from..... which of course would create issues if you are trying to develop some robust software :-)

As for the back covers....  yes I might say that a 10 min difference in run time may or may not be a huge deal depending on needs.... though honestly... who are the people writing and editing those covers?!?!?!? LOL! The other thing usually (but not always) on covers is the release date..... usually that's only something I'd notice with older DVDs

Anyhow... Skip / Pavlov, whichever you prefer to go by :-) can you confirm Addicted's initial note that it is NOT possible to place other filters into the toolbar other than the default option "Title" .... other filters must be selected by using the options/tabs at the lower left corner of the interface?

Thanks again!

Yes, that's how it is. Unless there's a plugin we don't know yet...

But as Pete has already pointed out, the layout system is very adjustable. You can place the filter like it's done here, e.g.:

Just download a bunch of layouts and try them out...

IMDb is perfect for those things.  I use it that way all the time.

I personally use both DVD Profiler and Collectorz. I think the database of DVD Profiler is much better than what you can get at Collectorz. DVD Profiler is also a lifetime license. Collectorz have changed their license scheme to free minor / paying major upgrades.

I export my DVD Profiler collection to XML, then import that in collectorz. DVD Profiler has an easy way of exporting the collection to a fully functional websites. One of the users even created an excellent template with frames and a simple search engine.
