rightly so indeed. It is against the rules for the online database.  So it does not belong in the profiles. (other then locally if one chooses to do so of course)

So? IMDb originating data should not be admitted to the online Db.

Please stop doing this.

1. There is no "next Spot site" in the works.
2. You are not a spokesmen for Spot if there were. You were banned from there for the very same reasons people want you banned from here.
3. When you say crap like this, it's a reflection of the rest of the old Spot users that post over here. I can safely feel I speak for all of them when I say you speak for none of us, and we'd wish you'd stop.

Please stop bringing up this "new forum" or "new program" or whatever the hell it is you think you know. Every time you do this, it creates this "us vs. them" mentality that doesn't exist and it's not appreciated.

I have a lot of IMDb data in my local, and if Ken had chosen to license IMDb data for the online I'd have no problems with that.

But he hasn't licensed it. And in the interest of avoiding litigation and potentially shutting down Invelos and therefore DVD Profiler, I'm perfectly happy to keep IMDb data out of the online and keeping it local.

And no, I'm not exaggerating. IMDb was in contact with Invelos back when it was Intervocative about this very thing. Hence the "no IMDb data" rule and the strict enforcement of it.

Oh my, too funny.

Lab:

You are free to use IMDb locally if you wish. Legal issues asied, and even ignoring the gross inaccuracies rampant at IMDb, if all that you wanted was another IMDb then there would be no need for DVDProfiler. After all, you can track 10,000 titles in your collection at IMDb for free.

As I've already mentioned in this thread, I'm guessing one of the following is true for those other sites:

1. They licensed the data. (I know this is the case with Collectorz)
2. They didn't license the data, but were too small of an operation for IMDb to notice.
3. They don't charge for the use of their program, and so the data isn't for commercial use, and therefore they get away with it.

As for "certain info" being allowed to be used... that may be true or it may not be. I haven't looked into IMDb's specific licensing. If it is true, I'd guess that Ken has chosen the better-safe-than-sorry approach to IMDb data mining and simply banned all of it.

There's been a lot of guessing in this post, but the basic point of it not being allowed in the online remains. I'm not sure why that's such a problem. Keep it local or source it from elsewhere, it's not that difficult to do.

edit: And there you have it, the IMDb licensing info. So in no uncertain terms is even "certain info" allowed for commercial purposes. And since it's free to use when it's not for commercial use, freeware can allow IMDb data.

It doesn't really matter what you think.  To be clear, it doesn't matter what any of us think.  As has been said, Ken has dealt with IMDb directly and knows what can and can't be done.  The main db belongs to him, so it has to follow his rules.  If you want to use their data in your local db, that is fine.

Don't worry MadMartian. My tax money pays for his unemployed backside to buy Blu-rays and this program but I don't think we'll allow it to stretch to buying IMDB data for him.
