Don't worry MadMartian. My tax money pays for his unemployed backside to buy Blu-rays and this program but I don't think we'll allow it to stretch to buying IMDB data for him.

EDIT: Actually, I've never divulged my business turnover to anyone but my folks and the taxman. Now is not the time for it either.

This still stands though:
And unemployment is a cheap way out. Work for yourself, do anything. I started by buying things from Poundland and selling them door to door for £3 each. Selling 3 items in an hour after costs leaves you above minimum wage and it really isn't that difficult.

Maybe use some of that to get a few books on aspergers and get back to me when you know why i can't just go out there and do anything.

I can't just go out there and do any old thing Sam if i could i would but it's a very complicated problem which is reflected in the fact that only 15% of ppl with aspergers actually have a job. Im lucky im doing something about it rather giving up like other ppl and by going to college that's one way.

I come from a family which actually knows a lot about business on my mums side who are making 6 figure sums.

Actually im starting to wonder if Sam has chartered account whos related to me give he lives rather near him lol

Allow me to clear up any misconceptions.  We don't have anything against IMDB - in fact the opposite - we have admiration for their efforts and see value in allowing our users quick access via menu option to their site.  Similarly, we link to a variety of other sites (rottentomatoes, metacritic, apple, youtube, wikipedia, yahoo, etc) via the profile links feature.  Linking to these sites is a win-win - it generates some amount of traffic for them and provides value to our users.

What we do not allow is submission of data copied from any third party database in violation of that database's policy.  If you would like that policy changed you are welcome to discuss it with those third parties.  In the mean time our hands are tied and we will not be party to what amounts to data theft.

So, copying the cast from IMDB is not allowed.  Nor is (for instance) copying the text of a review from rottentomatoes and submitting it as your own via the review submission feature.  We respect copyright and licensing, and are very familiar with the effort and resources that go into maintaining user-submitted databases of this size.  We will not budge on this policy.

Note that this policy covers the online database (contribution) system only.  As previously mentioned, we do not attempt to control any aspect of the data you keep locally.  That is between you and whatever data source you choose.

I hope that clears things up.

Is it possible to use any of the money that we used to pay for profiler with to obtain some sort of licensing agreement with IMDB to use there data?

IMDB charge $15k per year I think. Why spend money on data people are willing to input?

Thank goodness for that... because I for one wouldn't want it. I love having the credits in profiler actually matching the credits in the film!

Well could you at least make a sticky thread for name phrasing lol So any name can be asked about without having a lot of useless 15 page threads.

IMDb was in contact with Invelos back when it was Intervocative about this very thing.

Just curious.  What is your source for this statement?

IMDB data, even when accurate (which despite what people here will tell, it generally is), is only minimally usefully to DVD Profiler because of the way in which they handle things. It's great for a movies site but not so much for a DVD program. For instance, if there are multiple versions of a movie with different cast lists, they keep a combined list.

Holy moly, that's a question... some Intervocative thread from years back. That's about as accurate as I can get. Martian indicated he remembers it too, maybe he can better answer the question. Sorry.

I certainly hope you never change that plan.  IMDb has it's purpose, and they serve that purpose rather well.  I see no reason to replicate what they do, here.

For those people that want to use IMDb data in their local, there are many ways to accomplish that goal.
