I think Hong Kong belongs to China now at any rate.

Aren't they in some kid of mixed state until 2046...?

From wiki:

"The Sino-British Joint Declaration and the Basic Law of Hong Kong stipulate that Hong Kong will operate with a high degree of autonomy until at least 2047, fifty years after the transfer. Under the policy of "one country, two systems", the Central People's Government is responsible for the territory's defence and foreign affairs, while Hong Kong maintains its own legal system, police force, monetary system, customs policy, immigration policy, and delegates to international organizations and events."

Apart from the fact that its not an independent country, it sure seems like one.

Well, sionce producing movies is not considered as part of "territorial defence" or "foreign affairs", I'd advocate the use of Hong Kong as COO until 2047.

In January 2047 someone can revive this thread (probably won't be me though...)

There are some frankly silly Country of Origin contributions being made now, where they take the 1st listed country from IMDB without applying any common sense to the matter. For example, one contribution for Girl, Interrupted has Germany as Country of Origin, and another for United 93 has France as Country of Origin! The reason for this is clearly that IMDB has listed 1 German production company (of 4; the 3 other prod.companies are American) for Girl, Interrupted and 1 French prod.company (of 4; 2 of the others are US companies, and 1 is British) for United 93.

It depends, for example in finnish movie awards the rules say that the nominated films has to be finnish. They define finnish so that more than 50% of the money to make that film has to come from Finland. As silly it is, but few years ago there was a case where one film didn't equal finnish, even it was filmed in Finland with all finnish cast and crew, premiered in Finland, spoken language finnish etc. 55% of financing came from Sweden so it was cathegorized as swedish. Silly, of course, but we need to know now what is the final rule with the contributions? I, agree that Girl, Interrupted should be United States by common sence (Even that I contributed it as German), but does anybody know how they list countries in IMDB? Alhabetical order or by greates amount of finacing? Is there any other place to verify the country of origin?

At what position in the movie credits are those production companies listed? If a German production company is listed first in "Girls, Interrupted", then I would support to enter Germany as the country of origin as long as we can not enter more than one country.

That sometimes happens today already (you're free to summon up whatever reason for this behavior yourself, I won't elaborate )

I don't think that the origin of the funds for the movie should be used to determine the COO.

If that were the case, all movies by Uwe Boll would end up as being produced in Germany, and I strongly object to this association, even though Boll himself is German, but he shoots most of his crap in Canada or Romania, not around here.

So let's find something else to stick the COO on.

In Girl, Interrupted the opening credits are as following:

Columbia Pictures [American company]
present
A Red Wagon Production [American company]

Near the end of the end credits:
© Global Entertainment Productions [German company]
