That's a common misconception. The common name is much more than a link. The common name is the name which is used for a person in the profiler database and consists of up to four text fields where each of those fields has a special meaning (whereas the as credited name is only a single text field). IMO this is reason enough to select the common name wisely and not randomly. The CLT is hardly random. Participation in the online database is 100% voluntary. You are under no obligation to either submit or accept changes to the online system. There are changes that I don't agree with, and I keep my preferences local. In my case, Anthony Head will always be credited in my local DB as Anthony Stewart Head, but I will not submit any changes to any of the Buffy series' that involve propagating cast info. |

I just consider that rules are made to say what to do in 99% of cases. And when rare cases are a problem, we should do what we find intelligent to do, not just say "I enter wrong data because rules, that are not adapted to this special case, ask me to do so", and act without thinking. After all, firemen may drive faster than normally autorised, or you can swim in a forbidden place to save a drowning baby. I proposed that in specific cases, contribution should be made with documentation explaining why, in this case, they are not adapted. After that, screeners accept or not, but nothing wrong is contributed. In fact, I frequently saw screeners doing that, accepting, for example, crew roles not in the list, several movies on same disc with dividers, or correctly spelled accented names. But this way to use intelligently the rules is not accepted by a majority of users and some users will even say it is pure horror to spell names correctly when rules ask for mistakes. That is my problem here. The worse is when some users tell to the others that they must follow rules strictly to the letter, then allow themselves to violate what they want, as demonstrated in the first pages of this thread. | | | | Images from movies |
