Since it seems there isn't a fix to change the date formatting:

I'd like an option to use the default formats for the selected system locality on the phone.

The default settings on the phone (or other Android device) should be used for both long and short date formats.

If there isn't a default format - my Samsung galaxy S2 only has a default short date format then that should be used.
