As we all know the Invelos filter does the following

When you submit

Fred//Smith Jr. it places the following in the online database Fred//Smith, Jr.[Fred Smith Jr.]

So because of that we count Fred Smith Jr./Fred Smith, Jr. as the same name for counting purposes since the filter forces the common name.

But what I have noticed in many common name threads is the same is not being done for other filter based common name alterations that the filter does.

For example (and I ran some tests to validate this)

A.J.//Smith is filtered to be A./J./Smith[A.J. Smith] - The filter forces the common name to be A. J. Smith
A.J.//Smith[Albert Smith] is filtered to be A./J./Smith[Albert Smith] - The filter forces the common name to be A. J. Smith
A./J./Smith is filtered to be A./J./Smith
A./J./Smith[Albert Smith] is filtered to be A./J./Smith[Albert Smith]
A. J.//Smith is filtered to be A./J./Smith
A. J.//Smith[Albert Smith] is filtered to be A./J./Smith[Albert Smith]

Now since the common names are the same in the online profile why do most common name threads count these separately.  From an online database perspective they have the same common names.

I know the download process preserves what you have locally. as far as parsing First/Middle/Last names, but that does not affect the common name.

It seems to me as far as common names are concerned we should be considering A.J. Smith to be the same as A. J. Smith since the filter transforms it for the online profile.  It seems to me that our common name counting should take into account everything that the Invelos filter does for accuracy and consistency.  After all as far as common name determination is concerned we combine titles counts for " jr."/", Jr" situation where the filter does the same type of manipulation.

Now if it were AJ//Smith or A/J/Smith (no periods to separate as initials) - Those would be separate since the filter does nothing to alter those.

Ok here is another one, it is not based on the filter.  But based on the rules, in particular the honorific rule

It seems to me that common names should be calculated based on the following.

I see these a lot in documentaries where in some they use the honorific and sometimes don't.  But it does happen in movies and TV shows.

Dwight D. Eisenhower
General Dwight D. Eisenhower
Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower
President Dwight D. Eisenhower
Dwight David Eisenhower
General Dwight David Eisenhower
Gen. Dwight David Eisenhower
President Dwight David Eisenhower

It seems to me the titles/profiles should be counted together based on what would be the common name after the honorific rule is applied.

The counts for these would be counted as Dwight D. Eisenhower
Quote:

Dwight D. Eisenhower
General Dwight D. Eisenhower
Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower
President Dwight D. Eisenhower

The counts for these would be counted as Dwight David Eisenhower
Quote:

Dwight David Eisenhower
General Dwight David Eisenhower
Gen. Dwight David Eisenhower
President Dwight David Eisenhower

In my mind the main logic in combining the counts is simply since the rules have the specific honorific rule that forces the common name, but when the person has several honorifics that would yield common names we have to accurately figure out which one to use.

In my mind it is the same as abiding what the filter does as far as our counts.  But this one is rule based

Thoughts?

Bad example - how many of the profiles that he is credited in are not news footage/archive.

Don't get caught up in the example just because it is a historical person as many people who have honorifics are.  As we know people in news/archive footage can be credited as long as they are in the actual documentary credits.  Uncredited news/archive footage is invalid.

Which ever person is chosen for an example can have the same issues.  But the credit does have to be valid historical or not.

For this example assume that all credits are valid.  I am not using an actual example of a profile to be changed.  The example is merely to show ways honorifics can affect the common name depending on how you count
