I'd like to make a new plug for my program GsyCastCrew. I recently noticed that the download page had some bad links, so I fixed those. I hope that if anyone tried to download it and failed, they would have notified me, but you never know. Anyway...

The reason for the program was that I wanted to have a data entry window that was as unobtrusive as possible so it could be on top of the DVD player program while I ran the credits. That way I wouldn't have to switch between player and Profiler, so it was much easier to make sure that I spelled the names correctly. It also parses the names, so you don't have to enter first. middle and last in different text boxes.

If anyone is interested in having a go at it — GsyCastCrew.

Ok, I understand how it works. I had not used this tool  since I prefer real data and do not care about credit data, but it can be a great tool for people who want to contribute, following the "credits carbon copy" rule.

Well, just because you read the credits and enter them doesn't mean that you have to enter them verbatim, unless you intend to contribute them. Even if you prefer "real data" you need to know who is in the film, don't you?

The problem with credits is the linking. If credits show "Anna Levine", the risk is to not discover that she is the same person as "Anna Thomson". So I prefer to use DJ Doena's CastCrewEdit2 plugin, then correct the rare IMDb errors, rather than copy credits.

As someone who checks film data on a daily basis (and contributes to IMDB also on a daily basis), I can tell you IMDB errors are anything but rare.
Cast, crew, running times, production companies, etc, errors all over the place that need constant correcting....some minor, some major.

Here's but one error (among 12) from last night (minor to be sure):

Thank you for your contribution to IMDb. The information you have supplied is being processed by our team.
We aim to process contributions as quickly as possible, our time to publication changes based on the type of data you are contributing. You can find more details on our processing times page.

Same name, different person.

IMDB works like Invelos online...user contributions and all that implies.
But I do agree that with IMDB at least one gets linking, with Invelos online you don't.

I agree, if you consider roles, and probably problem of unlinking same name, different (unknown) persons. I don't care about roles (for me Kirk, Captain Kirk or Cpt James Kirk are exactly the same...), and the second problem is important for me, but probably one of the most difficult to detect.

When I spoke of rare errors, I meant spelling errors, that are rather rare in IMDb, and omnipresent in Invelos (quite each profile of European non English movies, meaning thousands of useless fake variants).

Actually, I wasn't referring to "roles" (I also don't care if its Kirk, or Captain Kirk)......errors (in IMDB) that I have encountered and corrected include assistant editor being credited as the EDITOR, a production mager being credited as a PRODUCER, a choreographer being credited as a DIRECTOR (simply beacause his credit reads "dances staged and director by", sort of like crediting the director of photography as a DIRECTOR), actors that do not even appear in the movie, someone born in 1980 being credited as appearing in a movie released in 1939, running times being off by more than 20-30 minutes, wrong production companies, and anything else you can imagine....

BTW, I'm not trying to change your mind or stop you from using IMDB

Not so rare, I'm afraid....especially in lesser known names

I agree with what you wrote. In fact, to explain my position, I consider that, to obtain what I want in my own database, IMDb is a far better starting point than the movie credits (not speaking of errors added to those credits by Invelos rules).

I got tired of using JRuler to measure the height and width of movies on my PC in order to calculate the aspect ratio. So I wrote a small utility to make it easier. It's called AspectGuide.

It's a semi transparent window that you place over your player window, and then resize it to cover the entire image, and it then displays the aspect ratio.

You can find out more about AspectGuide here.

Nice...and easy to use. Beats what I was using.

Yes, it is really great.  Thank you.
Do you ever find yourself striving for perfection with an almost worthless attempt at it?  Guttermouth "Lemon Water".  Also, I include in my Profiler database VHS tapes, audio DVDs, audio books (digital, cassette and CD), video games (digital, DVD and CD) and 'enhanced' CDs with video tracks on them, as well as films and TV I've bought digitally.  So I'm an anarchist, deal with it.  Just be thankful I don't include most of my records and CDs etc in it too; don't think I haven't been tempted...

Well, turns out I was wrong. At least partially. It wasn't hard at all to add resizeability. However, it only works from the lower right corner. You can't grab a side and resize it.

So, just for you, Pete - AspectGuide 1.1

And while I was at it, I added my standard About window that also checks for new versions.

Awesome tool!!  One suggestion, based on my personal preferences, it would be great to be able to do re-size it horizontal and vertical separately. It'd be great to have a grip halfway on the bottom and the right.  Even without it, it will make it much easier.  Wish I still could throw a greenie your way!

Glad you liked the program. No, I have no donations link, and the reason is twofold. For one thing I don't really need the money, a "thank you" is quite good enough. The other reason is that I feel that if one asks for money, one takes on a support responsibility. Not legally perhaps, but morally. More so if you actually set a price on the program, but even with donations, in my opinion.

That's not to say that I'm not willing to help users if there is a problem. But by not asking for money, that becomes 100% my decision. If I feel it's too hard, or too time consuming I can say "Sorry, I can't help you" without feeling that I have cheated anyone. Hopefully things will never come to that, but I just feel more comfortable sharing my work that way.

You're totally right, it would be great. But the reason you won't see that is that the current resizing function is supported by the system (not sure if this is a .Net Framework thing or specifically a WPF thing). Creating a borderless window that resizes from either side would probably be possible, but it would entail much more work than I'm prepared to put in for a rather minor (in my opinion) improvement. So I'm afraid you're stuck with resizing the way it is. Sorry!
