If you dont have the sony 777 ES (RS-232) you could use a USB-UIRT, along with Automation Software such as Girder, allows your PC to both Receive and Transmit infrared signals. It woud be nice to click on a individual DVD in the DVD Profiler database and run a application. You could effectively use this softeware to control the 995 Sony 400 disc DVD player and would bring this software to another level.

Thanks,
Josh
Gotcha. I have the design in mind. I'm just finishing up a prior project. In a few days, I should have completed the packaging and testing of the SONY version of my plugin. Then I will work on a version that does what you say - call any program after DVD click. It will be a minor change to the code to support that. In your opinion, what paratmeters should be passed to the called program - I would assume at least "location" and "slot" to identify which changer and which slot. Are the title or UPC required?
Thanks for your support.

I have never used the Grider software but the company Cinemar has used it with good success for their DVD Lobby automation software. http://www.cinemaronline.com/dvdlobbypro.html    I would think the Grider software only need to know the slot number, so when a DVD is clicked it will call up Grider and transmit a specific IR signal "slot 261". If you have multiple DVD players I believe you can change the remote code so only one of the DVD players will recognize the IR signal for slot 261. I am a home theater enthusiast (engineer) but not a program writer. If you are willing to work on this I would buy you the Grider software for you that way you could see how it works and incorporate it into your software. No strings attached of course; just that you would give it an honest try to make it work. I think this would be great for people without the Sony ES 777 model.

Let me take a look at their site and forum. Perhaps there is a trial download. ANother alternative, if you already have all the stuff needed to test, would be for us to partner. I'll try writing the code - you do the testing. We take the details "offline" and just report major progress to the forum. Could that work?

Oh, and by the way, any "IR" or RS232-based process also needs to incorporate a companion process to switch the A/V system / monitor to the correct video channel - or is that overkill?

Edit: Yes they have a 30-day free trial. I suggest you get it, and experiment. It took me all of 5 minutes to download and install it. Once you are sure that it will do what you want it to do, it should be possible for me to make my plugin call the program.

Oh, if there is a trial version of the software that is great. I will order the USB-UIRT at http://www.usbuirt.com/  .  I will mess around with this and see if I can get it to control my Sony 985 DVD player properly. I think it would be nice to have the capability to control inputs on other components etc. It might be possible to build a series of delayed IR transmission with one press of a button using the Grider software. This would allow you to click once on a select movie in DVD profiler and change Receiver inputs, play slot #x. That would be just like the Escient DVDM-100, except better! Once I get this working how can I contact you to see if you can get your program to call up and run my string of IR commands.

You have crafted the precise response I was looking for. Just respond here and / or via PM when you're ready. I'll be watching!  Edit: I just ordered one of those USBUIRT gadgets.

Mediadogg,

I am trying to get your new plugin to open a .txt file and it asks me to check the file path and association and retry. I typed "file" in the location of Disc Info. Am I missing anything? I tried to open several different types of files and none would open.

Well you didn't mention putting the filepath in the notes field. So maybe that's what you are missing. Somewhere in the notes field you must have: [filepath] .... [/filepath], where the "..." represents the path (icluding drive letter) to your file, such as c:\myfile.txt.

Anyway, can we take this dicussion to the LoadDVD plugin thread? Thanks for trying it out.

Version 0.2 of LoadDVD has preliminary support for RS232 in that it will call a specific .BAT file (RS232.BAT in the {DVDProo}\Plugins\LoadDVD folder ), and pass it parameters which you can tailor to meet your needs. The parameters include profileid (UPC), disc# and slot# from the SLOT field.

Let me know what happens if / when you try it out.

Thanks.

Just in case you haven't noticed, LoadDVD 0.3 has cx777.exe included with a sample .BAT file designed to play a DVD from a SONY cx777es connected via COM1. I have no way to test it, and I haven't gotten any feedback that would motivate me to continue working on this project - e.g. to add a catalog function. So, if anybody has used it, I need to know your experiences.

Regarding USBUIRT, I bought one and have found free software for capturing codes. The designer of USBUIRT makes a free dll available, which is being used by all those fancy AVS tools out there. I have plans to make direct calls from LoadDVD to the USBUIRT dll, but once again, I haven't heard from anybody regarding the preliminary stuff I put in already. I can't continue on that one either, without any feedback.

Has anybody tried the RS232 support yet? I'm trying to respond to requests, but I'm getting no feedback. I'm progressing on the USB Carousel and USBURT stuff also, but perhaps it is unrealistic if I continue to get no user cooperation.
