If the porn industry goes HD DVD, I'll go HD DVD!

why?

so you can see that porn chick isnt perfect looking? i prefer amatures and a handycam myself

to get this topic back to where it started... cubby... the biggest thing is the only people who can see you contributed the title are others who own the title... therefore it shouldnt matter what the title is.

Can't be more embarassing than the amount of people that just publicly admitted they own "Maid in Manhattan"...

And, as I pointed out, that is not true.
IF (for example) there is a homophobe user who wants to find out who is (probably) Gay all they have to do is open up Add DVD, limit it to Adult Titles, download 100 that sound like they're probably gay titles to their 'Wishlist' and then check the contribution histories to see who contributed them...

As two asides:
The HD/Blu-Ray war will probably be influenced by the Adult industry but the internet has a lot more sway now and so the backing of the porn manufacturers isn't AS strong as it was with VHS/Beta. Also there are already some manufacturers getting around the "No Porn on Blu-Ray" 'Rule' using outside pressing plants.

As mentioned I'm adding a whole load of adult titles from the old IVS database (but only where I can verify the EAN/UPC with an image and am as sure as I would be on something like a normal pre-release title)

Yes, but what would the homophobe DO with that information?  He can maybe start sending rude messages, or voting against updates, etc. Whilst that will be inconvenient and a pain until such time as he gets his ass kicked out of here, it's of no real consequence...or am I missing something?

Why would anyone subject themselves to possible harassment, no matter how short-lived? And in every community I've known, no matter what your taste in adult entertainment is, there always will be someone who needs to condemn you for it.

Some people have difficulties being martyrs, even if it is for a good cause.
If it wasn't for bad taste, I wouldn't have no taste at all.

Whilst I agree with your views about bigotry, I think we are making one of the classic critical reasoning errors (the false dilemma) here by jumping from one issue to the other without there being clear causality. By saying that there are (fill in the adjective) bigots out there (something which we all agree is true), who may have an issue with adult entertainment (which is quite probable), it is then sort of assumed that these individuals WILL (even though we use the words "might" & "want" but the emotional language leads you to believe that it will actually happen) go out to download such profiles (in a rather obscure way) with the view to harrass the contributors of the profiles (whilst there is a possibility, the probability seems low and it has not been proven) and because of that there is a need to implement an obscure protection mechanism for the contributors of these adult profiles.

My feeling is that if I'm concerned about being linked to an adult profile, I will not contribute to the main database, but put all my effort in enjoying the movie on my DVD player.... (which thankfully still has an operational fast forward button!)

I think the point is more that some contributors may be concerned about the possibility (whether it is likely to happen or not) and this seems to be born out in the low numbers of adult titles being contributed at present (though I accept there could be other reasons for this).
The effect, in this case, is not the harassment but the low number of adult titles in the database.

Excellent post, Johan. Similar theory to the old joke about the man sprinkling powder all over Trafalgar Square to "keep the elephants away".

I say encourage people to post the profiles. If something untoward should happen, and if it can't be controlled by usual methods, then think about making special arrangements.

Whilst I fully agree the idea should be to encourage people to contribute I think that making those arrangements in advance (whether required or not) may just be the best encouragement...

Voltaire53 had the intent of my post correct.

Some people enjoy adult entertainment, but do not enjoy being seen as having it. The purchase of it can be embarassing enough, and many will avoid the neighborhood of adult merchandise retailers.

It is the concern of possible bigotry which might cause this lack of large numbers of adult titles being submitted yet.

And yes, I think encouraging all submissions is a good thing, too.

As soon as I finish the Dharma School Hanamatsuri play, the CATA newsletter, the Eclipse website, the church newsletter, and recover from it all, I have a few dozen covers to scan. Maybe then, I'll have the energy to begin submitting profiles again.
If it wasn't for bad taste, I wouldn't have no taste at all.

I think it is also an assumption that the number of adult titles in the database are low. I couldn't find stats of how many porn vs non-porn titles go on DVD, but here's some figures:

  • Personally I have just slightly more adult titles than most people I know, mainly because I have a DVD bug which they don't have.  My ratio in this regard is 1.7%. (Start crucifying!)

  • The current Invelos database has 1.3% titles with adult ratings

  • The database over at Intervocative carries a healthy 6.5% adult titles.

  • Doesn't look like the DVD profiler community has any qualms about submitting the profiles ... and that the current shortage is just related to the brand new database. Thinking of which ... it's around 3 weeks or so and the database has grown from zero to 122000 profiles, which is pretty amazing considering that many (most) users of the software probably still doesn't know of the new version, and the fact that the free version users can no longer contribute profiles.

I'm a bit more concerned about the general low quality of the data (or rather lack of information) in the adult titles...

There's an "easy" way to get those profiles in .... someone must just download all 22000 in the Intervocative database to 2.4/2.5, restore it into 3.0 and then start contributing them.  Whoever is going to do that will genuinely be able to say that his RSI is as the result of excessive keyboarding!
