I'm looking for the common name of actor Herb Tanney.
Source
Source

He was a favorite of director Blake Edwards, and it seems that in every single film of Blake Edwards, Herb Tanney used an alias. The list is kind of ridiculous. I'm looking to see if he used any of his screen names more than a single time (or ever used his real name at all) to determine a common name, and if not, then I guess we have to figure out which title contains the most profiles to determine a common name. The following are all of the aliases he used through-out his career that are in the system:

Herb Tanney CLT: 9/15 (0 Confirmed)

Sacerdo Tanney CLT: 1/24 (1 Confirmed)
-Blind Date (Confirmed by T!M)

Sado Tanney CLT: 1/28 (1 Confirmed)
-The Pink Panther Strikes Again (Confirmed by T!M)

Savant Tanney CLT: 1/7 (1 Confirmed)
-Switch (Confirmed by AiAustria)

Schweitzer Tanney CLT: 2/2 (1 Confirmed)
-The Man Who Loved Women (Confirmed by Merrik)

Senilo Tanney CLT: 3/21 (1 Confirmed)
-10 (Confirmed by T!M)

Serge Tanney CLT: 1/20 (1 Confirmed)
-The Return of the Pink Panther (Confirmed by T!M)

Shep Tanney CLT: 1/5 (1 Confirmed)
-A Fine Mess (Confirmed by T!M)

Sherloque Tanney CLT: 4/13 (1 Confirmed)
-Victor Victoria (Confirmed by Merrik)

Sidi Bin Tanney CLT: 1/14 (1 Confirmed)
-Curse of the Pink Panther (Confirmed by T!M)

Sol Vang Tanney CLT: 2/4 (1 Confirmed)

Sputare Tanney CLT: 1/12 (1 Confirmed)

Steem Tanney CLT: 1/6 (1 Confirmed)
-Sunset (Confirmed by T!M)

Stiffe Tanney CLT: 1/2 (1 Confirmed)
-S.O.B. (Confirmed by Merrik)

Studs Tanney CLT: 1/2 (1 Confirmed)
-Wild Rovers (Confirmed by Merrik)

0 Unconfirmed Credits

Incorrect Credits
-Revenge of the Pink Panther (uncredited) (Confirmed by T!M)

Sy Tanney CLT: 0/0 (1 Confirmed)
-Ghosts Can't Do It (Confirmed by Merrik)
-This variant currently doesn't have any profiles in the CLT, but there is a profile in the system without cast and crew filled out currently (Ghosts Can't Do It). It's a Bo Derek double feature with no children profiles attached currently.

Other aliases without any current profiles in the system at the moment:

Stanley Tanney (apparently went by this alias in the film Number One with a Bullet)

If each alias was only used once (which seems to be the way it might work out), I'll add in how many profiles are currently in the system (with or without casts properly filled out at the moment) to help determine which name should link all of his aliases.

Thanks guys.

I was able to confirm the rest of the credits online.

As suspected, he never used his real name at all, and he used a different screen name in every single appearance he ever made on film. Gotta love the common name system, gotta link up 14 different variants to the same guy

I'll go through the system shortly and see if I can gather the correct number of profiles for each film to see if we can come up with some kind of common name "winner" here (hopefully one is vastly ahead of the others so a bunch of flip-flopping doesn't take place).

Thanks again!!

I'm wondering, if this should be the famous exception from the rule. I'd vote to assign Herb Tanney as common name. Shall we open a poll?

Agreed with ateo357.

Sorry, haven't gotten around to counting the profiles yet, had a friend's birthday that took up most of my day yesterday.

Will get to it today.

Here's what I got. The problem lol  , is I can't 100% know for sure if it's definitive as I can't possibly know if the titles are entered in a different language without an original title listed in the profile. For the moment though, these are the titles counts that I got:

Blind Date: 25 Profiles
The Pink Panther Strikes Again: 29 Profiles
Switch: 9 Profiles
The Man Who Loved Women: 3 Profiles
10 - 30 Profiles
The Return of the Pink Panther: 26 Profiles
A Fine Mess: 5 Profiles
Victor Victoria: 21 Profiles
Curse of the Pink Panther: 15 Profiles
Skin Deep: 6 Profiles
Son of the Pink Panther: 17 Profiles
Sunset: 10 Profiles
S.O.B.: 3 Profiles
Wild Rovers: 2 Profiles
Ghosts Can't Do It: 1 Profile

Looks like the movie 10, where he's credited as Senilo Tanney currently holds the most profiles within the system, but it's just a single profile more than another film. If someone else wants to try and get an accurate profile count, please feel free to double check.

And before anyone comments, yes, I'm aware of how ridiculous this is

I updated my Profiles, and checked the profile count for the The Pink Panther Strikes Again afterwards

28 Profiles for Sado Tanney + Herb/086162-243424/Mexico + Herb/6-438044-003352/Finland = 30

Edit:

Senilo in 10 lists only 23 entries in the CLT!

I don't think we should count profiles which are not included in the CLT.
- only for as simple titles as 10 they can be found all over the world's languages
- there are tons of dead profiles in the database which were created as previews (before the disc hit the shelves) and were never ever after removed...

Any opinions on that?

Currently, it seems that his credit in 'The Pink Panther Strikes Again' has the most profiles in the CLT of all his name variants, so if we had to pick one, I think it would have to be that one. But it's a mess alright.

Of course, as soon as a number of incomplete 'The Return of the Pink Panther' and/or '10' profiles are being completed, the common name may well shift, but unfortunately that's the nature of our common names: it's always about how the balance pans out *today*. By tomorrow things can always be different.

Both the Mexican and the Finnish profiles are "The Pink Panther Film Collection" box set profiles, which have the entire cast for *all* films in the set listed in a single profile. Per the rules, all of that cast/crew should be deleted from those parent profiles, and be put in child profiles, one for each film. Maybe those child profiles even already exist...

Sure is.

In all honesty, I only own one film with the guy in it, and can probably only see myself owning a few more at best, but it would be nice to link him throughout all profiles.

I'm not sure I agree with NOT counting profiles that simply aren't in the CLT. If they're in the system without a full cast/crew set in them, it's literally as simple as a copy paste job from one profile to the next to get the cast/crew into that profile. I mean, they're already there, we can't know for sure if they're a "dead" profile (not in all cases anyway, some can obviously be determined), one person might own them and it could be a legit profile.

As I said though, I only own one film with the guy in it, I have absolutely no horse in the race what-so-ever, I just think it would be nice for someone that owns six or seven profiles with him in the cast to be able to "officially" link them (as best as one can with the program).

If the profile with Sado Tanney has the most current profiles in the system at 28 (as T!M said if the Mexican and Finnish profiles are boxsets for the entire film collection they shouldn't have cast and crew listed in them) for The Pink Panther Strikes again, then that's cool by me.

I assume, most - better said a majority - of the profiles without cast and crew filled in are valid and used by some users. But for counting issues most is a very dangerous word - even worse is the risk to miss profiles, which are added in a local language and do not contain an original title...

Counting only the CLT titles may not be the best effort, but it is a solid base, which everyony can prove and which can be easily done.

There is no form of official linking. This has be done on a per profile base

I agree with the 28 profiles for Sado, and contributed my four profiles of this guy with this common name.
