While I agree that there is nothing in the rules that says that genres are not allowed in box sets, I voted no. I personally think that genre is something that shouldn't be attached to any box sets and that the rules should be amended appropriately. I think it should suffice that the genre is profiled for each individual movie/tv episode that belongs to the box set, but not to the box set itself - why should a box have a genre?? It is not a packaging related information.

Logically, I also think that a box set should not have a runtime, aspect ratio, audio definition, rating, country of origin, production year, studios... etc. That is all a movie/tv episode content related information.

For me, a box set is just a container of individual profiles and the rules should reflect that. Then again, I won't vote no for someone adding genre to a boxset nor do I vote yes for contributions removing genres from a boxset. The rules are what they are, but I think they should be changed.

You are mixing apples and oranges.  Your claim that the principle for assigning genres differs, between single movie profiles and box set profiles, doesn't change the fact that the rules clearly allow them for box sets.  On that point, which is the only point I was addressing, the rules are not vague.

I guess we are talking across purposes, then. I agree that the rules allow genres for box sets. I thought that you meant that the rules for box set genres in general were not vague, and that was what I disagreed with.

At one time I would have agreed that I thought the rule should be changed. But I have since changed my mind on it... after removing genre from parent profiles and locking locally... I personally found it was too much of a mess when I did things like filter and soon after restored the genres to the parent. In most cases it makes for a much cleaner search/filter results.

So I for one would vote to keep things as they are.

I voted No as I don't believe they should, I as well think most of hte fields should be left blank for Box Sets.

But also agree that they are allowed under the rules.  I keep mine blank and have them locked, so it doesn't really matter to me as I skip over those updates.

This discussion clearly demonstrates why I have no boxset in my profiles. A boxset is just a packaging and has strictly no interest for me. One profile=one (and only one) movie.

I am honestly at a loss here as to why anybody, that doesn't think a Box Set should have a genre, would even care.

If you don't use it, it has no impact on your collection.  On the flip side, if you remove them, it does have an impact...a negative one...on the collection of the people who do use it.

This seems like a change, purely for the sake of change, that adds zero value to the database.

So, again, I am at a loss here.

One could say this about many contributions or changes.

I find it interesting that the majority of voters feel the Box Sets' genre field should, like most other data, be left blank.

My opinion is to leave box sets as "blank" as possible. I would even prefer if you didn't have to include AR and such. The inclusion of the earliest production year for either movie I'm fine with. But otherwise it's useless information, since it won't be accurate.
I can think of several box sets with movies that are of all kinds: thriller/drama/crime. Not at all necessarily "related" to each other. And what if the box set includes a documentary? Maybe on the first disc, such as it was with one edition of the Alien box set, long ago.
Long story short, minimize the data for box sets and use all that data on the child profiles.
IMO this isn't far from wanting to include all cast & crew data as well for the parent.

I just want to point out that you are mistaken, Martian.
Genres on a box set can result in potentially unwanted hits in a genre search. It may not be a big problem, but it is certainly an impact.

Whichever direction it goes, fix your local the way you want and lock it down. I've been doing this for years.

Since contributors have used polls from previous forum threads as reason enough to add or remove info from a profile. Can we expect a flood of box sets with the genres removed in future contributions? So it looks like anyone who wants genres in box sets has to lock them and keep it local.

No because this this poll don't change the fact the rules allow for genres. Most people are voting for what they want to see... not what the rules say.

I will continue to vote no to any that does so... as well as resubmit any that does go through.

Hear, Hear!  I've felt this way for a long time and have voiced it in the past, but it always seems to fall on deaf ears for those that disagree.
