The rules are kind of vague about this. I looked through my collections and it seems mixed with quite a few both ways.

It depends on which box set we have:
Real Box sets (without cast/crew) should not have a genre.
Technical box sets (e.g. 3D/BD/DVD combos) contain a complete profile. Therefore they need all information including genre.
Complete list of Common Names  •  A good point for starting with Headshots (and v11.1)

Yes...box sets should have genres. Nothing in the rules say to remove them. Can be helpful...don't have to open box sets to see listed genres.

I'm trying to figure out how the rules are vague.  Anything not specifically mentioned in the Box Set section is supposed to follow the standard rules...or did I miss something?

I see problems including this data. What if the genre for each film differ? If so, how do we list the genres?

Since, with Box Sets, each film has its own profile, personally I prefer the data to be kept there.

The Box Set rules do not specifically address this issue, as it does with other data, so standard rules apply.

Yes... as the rules are written the standard rules apply. Which is to use the genres. Unfortunately I am the only one at this point voting per the rules on the contribution.

I see a problem with Genres and box sets.  I think the Genres should be excluded, leave it to the individual profiles...

While the rules do not exclude them specifically, what do you do with

Best of Warner Bros. 50 Film Collection.

What genres would you suggest?  You only get 5.  Which movie takes precedence?

Which include

1. Grand Hotel* (1932)
2. Mutiny on the Bounty* (1935)
3. Wizard of Oz (1939)
4. Gone with The Wind* (1939)
5. Maltese Falcon, The (1941)
6. Mrs. Miniver* (1942)
7. Casablanca* (1942)
8. Treasure of the Sierra Madre, The (1948)
9. Streetcar Named Desire, A (1951)
10. American in Paris, An* (1951)
11. Singin' in the Rain (1952)
12. Gigi(1958)
13. North By Northwest (1959)
14. Ben-Hur* (1959)
15. How the West Was Won (1962)
16. Doctor Zhivago (1965)
17. Cool Hand Luke (1967)
18. 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
19. Bullitt (1968)
20. Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory (1971)
21. Dirty Harry (1971)
22. Clockwork Orange, A (1972)
23. Exorcist, The (1973)
24. One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest* (1975)
25. Superman, The Movie (1977)
26. Shining, The (1980)
27. Chariots of Fire* (1981)
28. Risky Business (1983)
29. Amadeus* (1984)
30. Color Purple, The (1985)
31. Lethal Weapon (1987)
32. Full Metal Jacket (1987)
33. Driving Miss Daisy* (1989)
34. Goodfellas (1990)
35. Unforgiven* (1992)
36. Bodyguard, The(1992)
37. Natural Born Killers (Director's Cut) (1994)
38. The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
39. Matrix, The (1999)
40. Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (2001)

There is always going to be stuff like this that don't quite fit in with the rules... and that is which each and every rule you create.

What I do in a situation such as that is determine which genres is represented the most within the set. And that is what I use in the box set.

Either way you look at it... as the rules are written... removing them from the profile is against the rules.

It is against the rules to remove them on the basis that a Box Set should not have any genre. It is not against the rules, however, to remove them if they do not represent faithfully all that is in the Box set. Better no genre than incorrect or incomplete ones.

First I disagree blanking out the genres would be an improvement. They should be changed to the correct genres.

Second... The profile I am speaking of removes correct genres.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame: 2 Movie Collection

Completely removing...
Animation
Family
Musical

No way they are blatantly incorrect.

And his notes...

Box set shouldn't have genres. Those go on the movies.

I agree with Kathy. What sense does it make to put genres on box sets when you can only list 3 that show up in the online. I could care less "what someone thinks the box set genre is." I want to know what each individual movie is.

And the individual movie info is there as well.

And you said it right... you could are less. That doesn't mean everyone agrees with you.

Bottom line... it is against the rules to remove the genres from the box set profiles.

While I do  understand that the OP asked whether or not box sets should have genres, that is an irrelevant question when it comes to contributions.  The rules are quite clear on this subject.

The rules state:
Quote:
"For the main Box-set profile, add the individual profiles via "Box set" button. The following Clarifications to the standard Rules need to be used:"

"In addition to the above, the following are not included on the box set profile: Subtitles, Audio & Disc Features. List them with the individual profiles."

Genre is not one of the clarification / adjustments to the rules, nor is it specifically excluded, so you follow the standard rule for genres which state:
Quote:
"Genres are often a matter of personal interpretation, which can differ among users. If your personal preference for Genre differs from the main database, you can store the information you prefer in your local database and lock the Genre field from further updates. Do not make contributions that only change or re-order Genres, unless the existing Genre list is blatantly incorrect."

Based on Pete's description, the genres are not blatantly incorrect, so we are left with personal preference which the rules specifically state that you can keep them local and lock the genre field.

Rather than change the online, everyone that believes genres shouldn't be in a box set profile should follow that advice.  JMHO

my 2 cents .. box set - no year of release- no genre - no actor or crew etc .. but underneath  the 'expended' box set -- now includes separate titles ( 90 in some cases ) separate cast /crew& individual  year and of course the genre..  of the said Movie ..
In the 60's, People took Acid to make the world Weird. Now the World is weird and People take Prozac to make it Normal.

I say it's vague because the rules don't actually say that anything not mentioned in the box rules follow the standard rules. It lists some things that should be included and some things that shouldn't and genres aren't mentioned either way.
