No region code on a parent just means when you see the profile you know to look for it on the children.

BTW: I won't insist on this, but from my point of view, the region coding is a "disc feature", which are forbidden to be entered in box set parent profiles by the rules:
Quote:
In addition to the above, the following are not included on the box set profile: Subtitles, Audio & Disc Features. List them with the individual profiles.

It's definitely not a "feature", it's a restriction.

With this statement, I would be really interested, what your definition of disc features is.

I don't know what his definition is, but invelos has a list of Disc Features here, in the rules.

Region coding is actually listed here, under the heading of DVD Specifications so, no, it is not a 'disc feature.

In my opinion it is a good compromise to say that if Disc A has regions 1 and 2 and Disc B has regions 1 and 3 to only check region 1 at the box set profile.

Why? Well, to me this comes down to usefulness. Why do we do all this profiling? I'm sure there are some people out there that are OCD and do it just for the sake of doing it. But for the rest of us?

What is the region code info good for?

Play-ability.

I want to know if a disc is playable in my region of the world.

What are my options for the above-mentioned box set?

1) Check none. Which could either mean "nobody contributed yet" or "region free" (IIRC if I check all 6 DVD regions they all become unchecked. Correct?)
2) I check R1, R2, R3
3) I check R1

As a prospective buyer:

1) I will also have to download all the child profiles just to inspect the profiles for their region codes
2) I will be misled that all discs will be playable in R2 and R3
3) I am assured that all discs will play in R1

I vote for 3)

It would be great if "box sets" would inherit the region coding of child profiles.  Even if you could set region coding per disc would be a step in the right direction.

Yes, and when wishing is allowed: There has to be a possibility to leave the region code field blank, for cases like box sets with different region codings.

That may be how YOU would interpret it, but doesn't guarantee that others would interpret it the same way. If a parent displays No Region Coding, many people would assume they can play its contents on any DVD player, regardless its region coding.

The problem is that in DVDP the region coding field displays the same 0 (No Region coding) if the field is left blank without checking the data and if it has been verified that the discs in it indeed have no region coding.

I was just giving an example of how it could be used locally. There is a way to have it not show any region code, 0 or otherwise.

I would not go removing all region codes from parent profiles since it does not say in the rules that it shouldn't be here.

The rules should be made much clearer on this point. Not just for region coding, but for much more. The table shown on http://www.invelos.com/dvdpro/contributions/Rules.aspx?display=boxsets should be expanded with lots of additional fields, each with a clear instruction on how to handle them for these box set parent profiles. What I've never understood, for example (and I've raised that point here before) is why that page of the rules explicitly says that audio is to be excluded, but doesn't say anything about video. Surely, any reasoning that leads to excluding audio data, applies to video data as well? If you leave one out, then why not the other - that simply doesn't make any sense. I leave out both, obviously. Bottom line: if we want to leave the region field empty, let's have that page say so. How hard can it be to add one line, or even a couple? I fail to understand why things that could literally be settled in a manner of minutes drag around for years on end here.

As for the original question, the answer is either leaving the field empty, or else, to list the "lowest common denominator", which would be 1/2/3 in this case. Those with a player that only plays region 4 will not be able to play the full set. Ticking region 4 on the parent implicates otherwise, so that shouldn't ever be done.

I am all with you. I had exactly the same question about video, and it seems common not to put the ratio, but very often the other Video fields (Color, 2D, ...) are filled at the parent level, which I personally do not do and keep clear.

We need clear rules for all fields or set of fields (like Video).
