This could be a normal common name thread for screenwriter I.A.L. Diamond / I. A. L. Diamond
But names with or without spaces between initials are always a bit tricky.
Sadly the Invelos auto filter doesn't apply here because this guy has 3 initials and not only 2.

Here is his credit for The Apartment:

And his credit for Love in the Afternoon:

Currently most    profiles in the database    are listed under I. A. L. Diamond, but are    those credits above really for I. A. L. Diamond and not I.A.L. Diamond?

Maybe there are some obvious credits out there, so here is a list:
CLT:
"I.A.L. Diamond" is credited in the following 18 titles (114 profiles)
"I. A. L. Diamond" is credited in the following 27 titles (154 profiles)

I.A.L. Diamond (13 confirmed, 5 invalid):
The Apartment
Love in the Afternoon (confirmed by ninso4)
Avanti! (confirmed by ninso4)
Kiss Me, Stupid (confirmed by AiAustria)
Some Like It Hot (confirmed by AiAustria)
Monkey Business (confirmed by AiAustria)
One, Two, Three (confirmed by _ppj_)
Just Go With It (confirmed by T!M)
The Front Page
The Fortune Cookie (confirmed by ninso4)
Irma La Douce
Cactus Flower
Love Nest
The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes (confirmed by ninso4)
Fedora (confirmed by ninso4)
Two Guys From Texas (confirmed by ninso4)
Let’s Make It Legal (confirmed by AiAustria)
The Girl From Jones Beach (confirmed by ninso4)

I. A. L. Diamond (11 confirmed, 1 unconfirmed, 13 invalid):
The Apartment (confirmed by ninso4)
Buddy, Buddy (confirmed by ninso4)
Portrait d'un homme 'à 60% parfait': Billy Wilder (as himself)
Avanti!
Cactus Flower (confirmed by T!M)
Some Like It Hot
Let’s Make It Legal
Kiss Me, Stupid
The Fortune Cookie
One, Two, Three
Fedora
The Front Page (confirmed by ninso4)
The Girl From Jones Beach
Irma La Douce (confirmed by ninso4)
It’s a Great Feeling (confirmed by ninso4)
Just Go With It
Love in the Afternoon
Monkey Business
Love Nest (confirmed by ninso4)
Merry Andrew (confirmed by ninso4)
Murder in the Blue Room (confirmed by ninso4)
Never Say Goodbye (confirmed by ninso4)
The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes
Two Guys From Milwaukee (confirmed by ninso4)
Two Guys From Texas
Think different

Everything will be okay in the end. If it's not okay, it's not the end.

In these examples I'd vote for:

The Apartment: I. A. L. Diamond
Love in the Afternoon: I.A.L. Diamond

It remains absolutely ridiculous that we actually *do* this, that we actually try to determine whether there's a space, no space, or even half a space. Instead, we should just pick a standard, enter all of these according to that standard, and never look back again.

Many of these confirmations can be interpreted either way - it's not even about what's on the screen, but mostly about who's *watching* the screen. The 'One Two Three' screenshot by _ppj_ nicely illustrates that: it's easy to say that there are no spaces between I.A.L., but technically, you'd have to say that there's no space between I.A.L. and Diamond as well - you could say that the "credited as" name is I.A.L.Diamond, with no spaces at all. If you feel that there are no spaces between I. A. and L., then you really can't say there's a space between I.A.L. and Diamond either. So do we enter that as "I.A.L.Diamond" then? And if you think there's a space between the initials and the last name, then really, the spaces after each period are exactly the same, so then you'd have to apply spaces between the initials as well. Again: it's utterly ridiculous.

I can confirm 'Cactus Flower' as I. A. L. Diamond and 'Just Go With It' as I.A.L. Diamond, but again, these are my personal interpretations, that's how I've listed them, but someone else may see something else. And again, that's exactly why we *really* shouldn't do this...

It is not our choice, if we want to do this <...> - We are forced to do it, until Invelos alters the rules. ... Or we can make Ken changing the rules - but something like "make Ken doing anything" is far out of sight these days.

Until the rules are changed, we have to determine a common name (either using the CLT or a common name thread) to get the names cross linked. As annoying this situation is, as important it is to get a decision. As Ken said once (for the Man in Black title discussion) the direction of a decision is less important than the fact of a decision...

But two aspects on topic:
• I did not think of creating a third variant without any space, but this should avoid further useless duscussions.
• I think it is rather simple to decide if there are spaces after the dots or not in this case. Since all letters are fully wide at the bottom, it should be easy to decide if the space in front of the dot is significantly smaller than the space after the dot...

Maybe I remember this wrongly, but isn't it true that since there is an Invelos autofilter in place, this might end up with I. in the First Name field and A.L. in the Middle Name field (within the framework of the endless bickering on name parsing we used to have)?

No, the autofilter affects only the two initial variant (F.M. Last), but the three initial variant (F.M.M. Last) is ignored by the filter.

It doesn't look like there are any spaces to me, but I can see why someone would – it's not clear so would be open to interpretation.

Because the space on the left side of the dot is smaller than the space on the right side.

If you interpret it in another way, it would be: I.A.L.Diamond - without any space!

I think about this Billy Joel quote a lot when it comes to this inane discussion. The quote is about Christina Aguilera's vocal acrobatics, but it very well applies to the 'multiple initials' parsing.
Quote:
Pick a note, and sit on it

Actually, that's only part of the quote, but you get the idea.
There's no way that the rules will be updated soon, or at all. Make up your mind. Do a poll. Settle on one option. Pin the discussion. Done. Next.

Now, back to your regularly scheduled programming. Sorry for the thread hijack.
