How are you all filing / cataloging your DVD for easy retrieval? Are you doing it alphabetically, or by numbers or...?

I am just starting my cataloging my collection and want to start of right.

TIA

For me both...

I renumber my collection by title. So when I look at my list it is in both alphabetical and numerical order.

That is just one of several ways profiler allows you to do it.

As for the right way of doing it... there is only 1 answer there... the way that feels correct to you.

In DVD Profiler they are numbered by order they were added to the collection.

On my shelves they are alphabetical, for easy retrieval. I had originally considered to follow the numbered system of DVD Profiler, but then I'd always have too consult DVD Profiler to fins an item.

A few things are kept separate though, such as TV Series, the Pixar movies and The Criterion Collection, the latter sorted by Spine number.

Different strokes for different folks. Or as Pete says "the way that feels correct to you".

Personally I store them in the order they arrive, and label them on the spine with their collection number. Initially I tried to store them alphabetically, but it soon became too cumbersome having to move stuff to be able to insert new titles. This was when I started collecting DVDs back in the early 2000s.

The drawback is that I can never renumber my collection. Getting rid of titles that I am no longer interested in leaves "holes" in the collection that Profiler will want to fill with new titles. But then I hardly ever get rid of anything. The upside is that all new titles are stored together, so they are easy to find. But if I want to rewatch an older title, I do have to look up its collection number.

I guess it would depend a lot on how big your collection is and if you expect it to grow much larger, and how it is stored today. Do you want to reorder them ...?

I'm just now cleaning up what I call the "Movie Room" where the majority (probably 60%) of my collection is stored (the rest are in another bedroom). I'm now re-organizing them in bins and on some shelves, while still cleaning the room up and throwing away or donating misc items. Once I get that done, then I'm going to try and figure out how to organize the collection. I'm thinking about just labeling the bins with Bin A, Bin B, etc; shelf A, shelf B, etc and then within DVD Profiler putting that in the location field so i can easily (enough) find a title.

Off-topic, during this clean-up, I've managed to donate or sell hundreds of DVDs and Blu-rays I no longer needed (not to mention the amount of crap I had to throw away) either because I got another copy (different edition or better format) or just had no interest in. Still have a few boxes that need to go. *sigh*

For me it's an alphabet for DVD, alphabet for Blu-ray and an alphabet for HD-DVD. The few UHD movies i own are placed amongst the DVD's. My music DVD's are also separate.

For me, it's 10 10' shelves that are continuous from one end to the other; then I have Genre dividers and finally, alphabetical within the Genre. I also have 10 5' shelves that do not have any discs on them right now because of my big cull 4 years ago...I got rid of over 1700 DVDs and replaced what I could with Blu-rays. The shelves are hand made.

In Profiler, I number by acquisition, so newest film has the highest number.

At home, I organize alphabetically. Most of my discs are in binders, as I no longer have the space for the majority of cases. I have separate binders for Documentaries, TV series, and for Music (mostly concerts, but a few music documentaries like Jazz).

The only films that still have cases are Criterion Collection (DVDs have their own shelves, blurays theirs), and a few that have special cases like digibooks and such. I have a few out-of-print titles that I have saved the cases for, as well as the Twilight Time releases that I have, but those cases are in a box in my shed.
