Hi there,

I am totally new to all this so please excuse my ignorance.

I have added about 1000 titles to my online collection but have several 100 more Australian releases
which aren't in the database.
My confusion comes with all the different companies listed on the back cover.
Not sure the which are media companies or production companies or studios.
Does it matter which drop down menu a company is selected on as long as it is there somewhere
when uploading or is it more precise than that?
Sorry for the long winded question but don't know how else to explain it.
Thanks

Yes, there is a method to the madness.  Here is the portion of the contribution rules which outline the studio and media companies.  Using the rules outlined below, you can confirm the studios (theatrical and production) by using the film credits, studio sites, and other reference sources.  The media companies (publisher, licensor, etc.) can usually be found on the back cover of the release by using the below guide.  If you have questions on specific releases, you can always post in this forum and ask the forum members.

Quote:
Studios
List the Studios in the following priority.

  • Theatrical Release Studio(s)
  • Production Company(s)

  • Media Companies
The company(ies) responsible for the publishing (creating, assembling and ordering of the DVD/HD/BD content) and/or physical distribution of the media.

    Enter in the following order:

  • Publisher (Content) - Usually found as a logo on the bottom of the back cover or in the credit block, often containing the words "home video" or "home entertainment. Secondary publishers (eg. The Criterion Collection's Eclipse label) may also be listed.
  • Licensor (Home Video Rights) - Usually found (dated with the year of the DVD release) on the back of the box or in the credit block with words words regarding "under license from...".
  • Distributor - Usually found as a logo on the bottom of the back cover or in the credit block with words regarding distribution.

  • Some companies (using similar but different names) may serve more than one function. List such companies only once, using the name from the logo. List secondary publishers even if the name is similar. If you are unsure of the function performed, do not list the company.

Do not abbreviate Studio or Media Company names. e.g, use Universal Pictures not just Universal; The Criterion Collection rather than Criterion or Criterion Collection; Walt Disney Pictures not just Disney. Exception: If the studio name is too long to fit, use standard abbreviation rules.

Omit company suffixes such as LLC, Ltd., Inc.

Omit any locality-specific suffix. e.g. Enter Paramount Home Entertainment, not Paramount Home Entertainment (UK)

There is further information about correct listings of studios and media companies, and the opportunity to ask questions if unsure, in the Contributions forum.

For example, using Code Red DVD's The Last Hunter Blu-ray release the media companies would be:

    http://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?p=14435266#post14435266

    Code Red DVD (publisher)
    Variety Communications (licensor)
    Kino Lorber (distributor)

Also, to make your life easier, check to see if there's been a release of the same title in a different territory.  You can then use that profile as a template, just remember to change the EAN/UPC (from the main menu: DVD -> Change UPC) and the country of origin.  You'll also need to change the currency and manual disc ID.  And you might need to change the media companies depending on who's released it in Australia.  And you'll probably need to submit a new scan for the cover.

It's not as bad as it sounds.  The first time you try it'll be confusing and awkward, after that it gets easier.

    You basically have two options:
    1) Create a new profile from scratch (not difficult, but time consuming if you want to upload a full cast and crew)
    2) Duplicate an existing profile and make any necessary changes.

There's also the middle ground - create a new profile, but copy and paste a cast and crew from an existing profile of the same release.
