So, I have a question about the release for 2001: A Space Odyssey 4K UHD. It was initially to be released on October 30 and then delayed to November 20 for some unknown reason (the press release from Warner did not specify why). However, some copies were shipped out from Amazon (unsure if any other sites did or if any copies showed up in brick and mortar stores either). So, question is, should the release date be changed to November 20 or stay October 30?

I do have links from Blu-ray.com and thedigitalbits as 11/20 and have the press release itself noting this change. But curious if copies sent on 10/30 count as that the date should be kept or not. IMO, it would appear Amazon sent them out prior to receiving word it was delayed, but the rules don't really specify in a case like this, do they (or maybe Ken had made a statement in the past?)

The way I see it, the rules already cover this: the release date is the 20th of November.  So that's what the release date should be.  The fact that the release date has been delayed is irrelevant - the release date is 11/20/18 (or 20/11/18 if you're European).

The argument made to keep it October 30 is that copies had shipped out by Amazon and were received.

So what do we mean in DVD Profiler by "Release Date"?  Here is what The Rules say:

Quote:
DVD Release Date
Use the date when the DVD was first released for sale in its specific locality. Do not change the DVD Release Date if a release:

Goes out of print and then is subsequently re-released using the same UPC.
Is recalled due to a production error and is subsequently re-released in a corrected version

The DVD Release Date is always the date of Original Release.

In the case of 2001, the original release date was October 30, 2018 and some product was shipped from at least some suppliers on or before that date.  What part of this rule lets us change this original release date?

Are we tracking the announced release date or the actual release date?

Actual. And the actual release date is now November 30, 2018. Again, the source is Warner Brothers...

From the press release I received:

And that's to go along with the release dates from the links in my initial post.

And what about those actual discs that actual customers received before November 1st, when they were shipped on or before the original release date?

When were they released?

The rules tell us "Use the date when the DVD was first released for sale in its specific locality."

It does NOT tell us to use the date the DVD was first DELIVERED to someone.

I personally don't think there should be any debate, imho this is a non issue.

What about them? So you're saying when I, and others who get titles early should be able to change the release date? You're really stretching it.

WB changed the release date at the last minute and some pre-orders shipped on the original release date.  The fact that WB now has a new (i.e. revised) release date doesn't mean there wasn't an earlier "original release date" where product was released.

They didn't ship on the previous release date, Amazon shipped them well in advance of that date as people received them prior to 30 Oct.  But the Digital Bits reported the date change as of 25 Oct so the release date was moved prior to the initial planned date.

I'd go with the November date.

Just because Amazon broke the changed release date doesn't change the fact that the release date was officially changed by the studio.

The November date is the general release date and not the broke release date.

I can remember years ago I bought Godzilla on dvd from Walmart, which broke the release date early. I didn't change the release date just because of the Walmart purchase date. So see no reason to change this date either.

I don't understand why you can't see that you've answered your own question: you agree that WB have changed the release date.  So you agree that there is a new release date.  That is the release date.  There is no other release date.  Any earlier dates are irrelevant.

"The DVD Release Date is always the date of Original Release."  WB's "changed release date" was done at such a late date that supplies were already shipping to arrive to customers by the "Original Release" date.

If all you care about is some arbitrary date that's meaningless except to populate a blank data field then none of this matters anyway.

That data might be meaningless to you but there might be others who are interested in this data.

As with any other data, invelos requires some type of documentation in order to contribute that information to the online database.

What the majority of people, in the two release data threads, are advocating for is to use of multiple sites, including the official site for the DVD/Blu-ray release date.

What source are you going to use to prove the release date? There isn't source, allowed by invelos' rules, that would accept your early release date data.

Therefore, the only acceptable release date is the one that any member of the invelos' community can access that information.

What source(s) do The Rules say to use for release dates?  Here is the closest thing I can find:
Quote:
The authoritative source for information submitted should be the DVD itself.  Please don't submit content from a third party database, and always verify the specifications printed on the cover.  In both cases, errors abound, so always verify the information directly from the DVD whenever possible.

If you use the DVD itself then I would say the date you acquired it from your retailer is more legitimate than anything printed on a third party web site.

And it isn't "early release date data", it's original release date data.

I'd go with the Oct 30th release date myself. It seems a lot of people have received this already from Amazon. Just consider it an Amazon exclusive until Nov 30th.
