So here is the gist of it: there is a Yahoo Japan auction that I need to obtain. The problem is that the site/seller does not ship outside of Japan.

Has anyone here ever used a proxy service? There are several out there that will bid on your behalf, and then receive the items from the seller, and then ship them on to you. They of course charge an extra service fee which varies.

I found ZenMarket who don't appear to charge an arm and a leg for the shipping costs and fees.

There is also DEJAPAN who list a comparison with other competing services.

The online reviews I've read for them both appear to be mostly positive. Both appear to accept PayPal for the payment, however DEJAPAN seems more reasonable as you apparently do not have to "pay in advance"

If anyone here has had any experiences with either ZenMarket, DEJPAN or even some other proxy service, could you please share your thoughts?

No, they don't ship the item outside of Japan. I live in the USA. When I say "proxy" I mean a proxy shipping service as an intermediary... not a VPN.

So I decided to go with DEJAPAN, and it's been a pretty good experience thus far. They even gave a 300 Yen voucher to use on my first transaction.

I bid high, and surprisingly won low! Actually, I was the only bidder on the Yahoo Japan auction...so I won it for the minimum which was nice. And it had "free shipping" in Japan, so I wasn't stuck paying 2 separate shipping charges through the proxy shipping service.

I received an email just now that the item had already arrived to them (it only took 3 days from the auction seller), and they would request the 2nd "actual shipping cost" payment when it can ship from their warehouse. Thankfully, they do spell out on their website just how much they charge for US shipping, and it's very reasonable. Plus if I choose, they'll hold it on consignment for 30 days.

Edit: the 2nd payment (for shipping) was requested, and that came out to under $20 for EMS shipping, which is very reasonable. I use that when ordering from CDJapan and it is trackable and fast. So the total cost of the auction item + shipping was very reasonable and the entire process was very easy and fully understandable in English.

I'll post an update when I receive the item...

I received my order from DEJAPAN earlier today by EMS.

These guys are seriously fast and efficient! I won the Yahoo Japan auction on 1/16 and had the item in my hands within a week! It was also packed really well, in a nice box with a lot of bubble wrap protection.

I also surprisingly received a free item from the Yahoo auction seller, which was unexpected.

So yeah... I am 110% pleased with DEJAPAN and will definitely use them again as a proxy re-shipper if I'm in the market for any Japanese products which do not ship to the USA. And the best part is you hardly pay much extra at all for the service!
