Hello.

I am migrating from MyMovies to DVD Profiler.

Because they want to lock you into their system, exporting data is pretty much impossible in any meaningful way. They allow a complete data dump to XML with a directory for the cover art and so on but it's not really usable.

If I could provide someone with a sample of the XML, would it be possible to bulk import?

Sorry if this has been asked. I searched the forum but nothing popped out within the last 6 months.

Thank you!

I am just seeing this. We have done this many times in the past. Look at the plugin BulkEdit, which has XML Import from some years back. You could try it. Also, if you want, just post (by copy / paste) the XML text directly here - we only need to see the collection wrapper and maybe 2 or 3 profiles to get the idea. But we have done this before - it was a group effort, and the results were put into the BulkEdit plugin. so give it a try.

I just double-checked. I know we did CollectorZ and DVDSpot. Now I am not sure we did MyMovies. But try it anyway, and certainly post the XML sample, and we will go from there. There are a few of us that mess around with XML and usually collaborate to help folks out.
Thanks for your support.

Thanks mediadogg!

I will take a look at BulkEdit and see what happens. Maybe it was done and forgotten.

If it doesn't work, I will definitely post up some samples.

Thanks again!

Hi Slerch666.  I migrated my Blu-ray collection from My Movies to DVD Profiler a few years back. (I've been using DVD Profiler to catalog my DVD collection since the early years of the DVD format.) In any event, I thought I'd chime in, but would rather message you, so check your Inbox.  Cheers.

For the benefit of new folks and for the record, here is how the BulkEdit import of non-profier data works:

(1) First of all, no non-profiler metadata is used in the resulting profile
(2) The imported metadata is used to identify a matching existing profile id in the Invelos database. If a profile is located, only the profile ID and personal data is retained to create a skeleton profile that is then completed by downloading the official Invelos metadata.
(3) If a matching profile ID cannot be found, the imported metadata is retained and a manual profile ID is generated. Manual profiles cannot be contributed to the the Invelos database.

Just so you know.

Just so you know.

And I regards to (3) above, I would add that any Manual ID generated could in turn be updated after the fact if it actually represented a valid UPC, one that had yet to be contributed to the Invelos Online Database.  This would be done using the File Menu option, "DVD > Change UPC / Locality".

At that point it would be completely up to you as to whether you'd like to contribute the given profile or not, so that its available for others to download.  Contributing the profile would not be required, but encouraged since it would improve upon the Invelos Online Database.  Before contributing the profile though you'd want to carefully look over the profile ensuring it met the contribution guidelines.  What you do locally with your profiles is up to you though.  So long as you don't contribute something to the Invelos Online Database (for the benefit of others) that doesn't meet the contribution guidelines, no harm, no foul.

And as with My Movies, DVD Profiler also offers the option of locking down a profile in order to prevent your local profile data from being overwritten, i.e. allowing a profile update to take place, your local profile data being compared to the profile data of the shared profile(s) from the Invelos Online Database, any differences found locally being overwritten.  DVD Profiler's lock feature distinguishes itself from that of My Movies in a couple unique ways.  You can lock the entire profile down or instead lock down just parts of the profile selecting from a list of 22 separate items.

Thanks Lowpro. The reason I made my post was to make it clear to new people the the import process itself was not automatically populating the Invelos database with outside metadata. Of course, the user has the ultimate discretion as to what to do with manual profiles, regardless of how they are created. No individual has control of what another person will do. But I can say that I wrote my program to be respectful of Invelos policy.

Sure.  The main point I wanted to get across was that any Manual ID created could be updated after the fact to use the UPC instead, i.e. cases where there's a valid UPC, but one that hadn't been contributed by anyone yet, hence not recognized during the import process.

As the OP is more than likely new to DVD Profiler my reply naturally flowed from there to the Invelos Online Database, to contribute or not contribute, working with your local database, the locking down of profile data and so forth.

My Movies is a completely different animal.  It uses a forced sync model.  Any change made locally has to be able to sync back to their online servers.  It's required and forced on you.  You have no choice in the matter.  You're tied at the hip.  Your local database is not your own as far as My Movies is concerned.  I'm not a fan.

What I am a fan of though is the ability to browse my collection from My Movies for WMC7 via my HTPC at 150" diagonal in my home theater, hence I continue to catalog my collection in My Movies as well.  Aside from that I have no use for the application.  DVD Profiler, the whole package, the PC based application in particular is far more feature rich.  There's just no comparing the two from a purely "cataloging your collection" standpoint.

Thanks... AGAIN to both of you for the help here. I have quite a few profiles for Japanese DVDs and BDs for Anime that I had to generate for MyMovies. Guessing I could do the same here if the feeling moves me. Most of it is old, some dating back to early to mid 00s so it may not be totally of value to anyone else to generate the profile for it. But if I am feeling it, maybe I will try a few, see if they are approved following the directions and see how "easy" it would be to do the rest.

Grateful for the help.

I am likely to try the XML option tomorrow. If I don't like the result or want to compare, I have another option via the PM I received. Name withheld to protect the innocent.

Wink, wink, nod, nod.

And again, whether you contribute a profile or not, locally you'll certainly want to be sure to properly profile those titles, ones that aren't available in the Invelos Online Database.  The given UPC (JAN) or Disc ID doesn't need to be part of the Invelos Online Database for you to be able to use it locally with a given profile.  In fact, such profiles will still upload to the online view of your collection which can also be used to restore your collection locally if need be though I'd highly recommend you create local backups instead as they'll include both your local profile data and cover art.

Just keep in mind, with the free online view of your collection only profiles that are also available in the Invelos Online Database will have cover art showing.  I've got a number of profiles which only exist in my local database, that don't also exist in the Invelos Online Database.  In my case though I'm still able to enjoy all my local cover art online as I host my own phpDVDProfiler based website which uses both my local cover art and profile data.  Link action below in my forum signature if you'd like to check out the website. (Not mobile device friendly as the website uses old school frames.  If viewed from a mobile device it works best to find a profile in the left frame you'd like to view, then press and hold selecting the option to view the profile data in a new tab.  Works well.)

You are correctly covering one of the great advantages of automated import. It can give you a starting database, than you can work on as you have the time to fix up the profiles for submission. I would love to see those Japanese titles! Gambatte kudasai!!!
