Hi.

This thread might already exist, but I haven't been able to find it. So all apologies if it does… if so, please point me in the right directions. But if not, here goes

I'm cleaning up my database, and everytime I fall over an Asian film (mainly Hong Kong/Chines or Korean), there are multiple names for so many cast and crew, spelt multiple ways. most often obviously copied from IMDB, where they put the first name last (eg Fat-yun Chow), like Western names - but this is both gramatically right and wrong… Alll my Asian friends laugh, when I bring up this example and often say it would be like if it was an Asian database, you would call Steven Spielberg: Spielberg Steven, which we can all agree is also wrong.

A lot of the incorrect names are fixed, when using Credit Lookup Tool, so we are in the right direction - I can still eradicate the "Fat-yun Chow" and "Hark Tsui" entries out there, but I do occasionally stumble across names that are wrong and they have a majority in the Database when using CLT.

Eaxample
Kit-Wai Kai (film Editor)

This an obvious IMDB paste, so it is wrong - but it's the most common name - instead, it should be Kai Kit-wai or Kai Kit Wai (the hyphanated first name always gives it away as being incorrect).

So my question/suggestion is: I want to collect a list of names, where we can all agree that this is the correct one.

Hope you agree and will help out.

This is what all the common name threads are for, since we are supposed to use the most commonly credited name variant (using "Credited As" if necessary). So the most common name is "right", whether it is "correct" or not does not matter.

I agree with you, iPatsa. But I recently did an update of a profile - that hadn't been updated in 10 years, and the the most common names were not relevant anymore… The last contributer had done a long list of most popular names contra what was already there… and that was now out of date... I'm simply just suggesting a way we don't have to upate profiles to the next current fad That makes this database, slightly redundant. A name is a name :-)

My main concern is the IMDB copy/pasting... and yes, I do stick to using the most popular names, but often the majoritiy is only by around 10 titles/profiles - if it's more? Hands Down, I agree, that is not something we can fix.

Hope I make sense, and thanks for the feedback

Addition: And there is a statement from Ken somewhere out there, that we use first/middle/last not given name//family name parsing, meaning, that we do not try to determine the family name, which are usually liested first in Asian names...
Complete list of Common Names  •  A good point for starting with Headshots (and v11.1)

That is as far correct....but depending on Country the Names in the Endcredits could be in the correct (Western) Order.
At least if i check (usual anime) japanese credits with google translate it shows the translated stuff as first/lastname....and i doubt that the app knows that and displays it that way for us...

And that's another thing that really should be in the rules. As it is, I'm sure many (most?) users assume that Last Name means family name, also for Asian names.

Thanks Again for all your replies - I get it.

But just found this one… and this is what I was actaully aiming for in my original discussion. But I get what you are all saying.

But just for laughs:

Cheung Tung Joe instead of Joe Cheung - and THAT was accepted in the Invelos database Don't worry, I'll fix it now - but it might be the most common name out there...
