I have tried to stay away from the whole birth year and common name problems because I have considered it an almost impossible task to get it right. However, I started to try to experiment with extracting invalid birth years from my program CastCrewQuery, and now I am even more confused than before.

I found that I had
- Harry Stradling (1901)
- Harry Stradling (1925)
- Harry Stradling, Sr.
- Harry Stradling, Jr.

I remember that there were discussions about the two Lon Chaney, and if I remember correctly the result was to use birth years.

From what I have been able to figure out from the various forum posts, in the case of the Stradlings we should not use birth years, but rather Senior/Junior. Maybe I've got that wrong, I don't know. But what I would like to know is - what determines if we use Sr/Jr or birth years?

What determines that is whatever is "common" - that's what "common names" are. If one of them is mostly credited with a Jr. or Sr. suffix, then that's his common name for our purposes, and then no birth years are needed (or even allowed). But if they're both mostly credited as just "Harry Stradling", then birth years are needed to separate the two. So there's no standardization like "always use suffixes" or "always use birth years" - in each case, is simply depends on what their common names are.

The common name-finding thread for both Harry Stradling's is here. It shows that the father's common name is Harry Stradling and the son's common name is Harry Stradling, Jr.. Since they have different common names, those separate them, and thus no birth years are needed. So those are the two name variants you should have in your database - without birth years. The father's credits should be under Harry Stradling and the son's credits under Harry Stradling, Jr..

Thanks T!m,

It would have been easier if one could see in the CLT if there is a birth year or not.

It's OK to look in the list of accepted BYs, but finding anything in the common name threads is a pain in the ass.

The tool from Matthias Wolf, we discussed here shows the birth years. - Here is a downloadable copy of goodguys former website (still available).

Did you try the thread mentioned in my signature?

Just an FYI: Even though that site is very good, it does miss some. So sometimes when you come across a birth year that isn't listed on that list don't assume it's invalid. Best to do a google search for the person's name and "invelos" in quotes. Usually you'll find a link to the documentation.

When I'm doing complete audits of movies, all that is just too much. I usually start out using IMDb data and I verify it against the credits. If IMDb indicates "credited as" then I use the CLT to check which name to use. If I see a birth year before I submit my contribution, I check it against the BY list. Even doing just that taxes my patience.

Entering names as credited is really all you have to do, all the rest is optional. Sure, it's nice to have linking that works, but I use IMDb for that.

That's EXACTLY what I do too!  (Except when I can't be bothered to.)  It sure provides hours of free fun, especially with Korean names when you end up with them all ways around, with and without hyphens.
Do you ever find yourself striving for perfection with an almost worthless attempt at it?  Guttermouth "Lemon Water".  Also, I include in my Profiler database VHS tapes, audio DVDs, audio books (digital, cassette and CD), video games (digital, DVD and CD) and 'enhanced' CDs with video tracks on them, as well as films and TV I've bought digitally.  So I'm an anarchist, deal with it.  Just be thankful I don't include most of my records and CDs etc in it too; don't think I haven't been tempted...
