I think that TV series' should get an original title. The original title should be what is seen in the episode credits.

Forum posts are not rules.  The Rules say (on the topic of Original Title)
Quote:
The Original Title field serves two general purposes, but in both cases allows for the tracking of the original feature title. For profiles which have an alternate title displayed on the cover, use the title from the film's credits. For titles released outside their country of origin, use the original release title.
In cases where the title is the original title, leave the Original Title field blank.

- Foreign Films: The Original Title field will contain the original title for the main feature in the country of origin.  i.e. A German DVD release for a film originally produced in the United States would have the German title in the Title field and the English title in the Original Title Field.

- Modified Titles: The Original Title field will contain the original theatrical title, while the Title field will contain the title of the DVD release.

True, but sometimes they're the only thing we have. Here, however, we *do* have rules. You're quoting the wrong ones, though: those say absolutely nothing about TV shows, but only about films. And as such, they're about titles, not about season indicators - that's something else entirely.

But we do have specific rules for TV Series as well, and on titles they state:
Quote:
The title for a Box Set should be the title listed on the Front Cover. Season indicators, if listed on the cover, should be entered as part of the title, not the edition.

There's the key: the season indicators are part of the title. Note that there's, intentionally, not a word about putting the show's title, sans season indicator, in the original title field - and that's why we don't do that. Not because of a forum post, but simply because the rules don't tell us to. And for anyone who wasn't sure about how to interpret this particular section of the rules, Gerri Cole's public statement has effectively ruled out any doubt about that.

You're correct that it says nothing about TV shows.  They are, however, the only rules governing Original Titles.  IOW, there is no allowance in the rules to use the original Title field for TV boxed set titles.  Do a search on the printable version of The Rules for the phrase "Original Title" and tell me where TV titles are mentioned in conjunction with Original Title.

I repeat: for anyone who wasn't sure about how to interpret the TV Series rules about titles/original titles, Gerri Cole's public statement has effectively ruled out any doubt about that. "Since there is no listing under the TV Series for Original Title in the rules, it make sense to me that you would follow the rules for the title field. This would be to include the season indicator in the orginal title." It doesn't get much clearer than that.

This is what Gerri Cole said that has not happened:

I will add this clarification to the list so that it gets updated with the next rule update.

So, it's not in the rules.

The rules on profiles for TV Series - intentionally! - don't say to put a TV shows title into the "Original Title" field, and for those who still needed more than that, Gerri Cole actually publicly *gave* that clarification. Again, it doesn't get much clearer than that.

It's amazing to me how, on one hand, we're all craving for even the tiniest bit of input from Invelos on so many issues, and yet, when we actually *have* a clarification made by Invelos, then there are still people grasping at straws trying to ignore it. Apparently it's extremely hard for some people to keep their personal preferences local… But that's really one of the strong features of the program: you don't *have* to agree with everything. You *can* make different decisions in your local database. Maybe you're not displaying your local collection by original title, meaning you have no need for season indicators in the "Original Title" field. Good for you. Locally, do what you want. I just don't understand this seemingly burning desire to mess it up for the rest of us.

Exactly! If you want to do it your way, do it your way. I've been doing that for ages. Just change it and lock it.

How can anything done to the online "mess it up" for you if everyone can "keep their personal preferences local"?  Why don't you just keep your personal preferences local rather than expect me to follow forum posts over The Rules?  Contributors are required to follow the rules.

So that's what I'm doing. I've shown you the rules, and I've shown you Invelos's clarification on how to read them. There's no ambiguity here. End of story.
