1997, Manhattan est devenue la plus grande prison du monde, où vivent, en micro-société, près de trois millions d'individus. Une incessante surveillance électronique interdit quiconque de s'évader: les ponts reliant Manhattan au reste de la ville ont été minés. A la suite d'un attentat, l'avion du President des Etats-Unis se crashe dans le pénitencier. Installé dans une capsule indestructible, le Président, porteur d'une cassette importante pour l'avenir du monde, échappe à la catastrophe. Il est pris en otage par les détenus. Snake Plissken, dangereux criminel dispose de vingt-quatre heures pour ramener le Président, en échange de quoi sera libre.
