Ouvrier au chômage venu de Denver, John Nada arrive à Los Angeles. Embauché sur un chantier, il loge, faute de mieux, dans un bidonville. Nada découvre un étonnant trafic de lunettes. Une fois posées sur le nez, elles procurent une vision de l'environnement radicalement différente: les affiches publicitaires et les livres laissent place à des slogans autoritaires - "Consommez", "Dormez", "Regardez la Télévision", "Obéissez"... Elles permettent aussi de détecter d'épouvantables extraterrestres décidés à prendre le contrôle de la planète.
