1926. Harry Houdini (Guy Pearce) is the most famous performer in the world, but the "man behind the performer" is haunted by the loss of his beloved mother.
Obsessed with contacting her from beyond the grave, Houdini offers a $10,000 reward to anyone who can reveal her dying words to him - something which only he knows.
Enter the beautiful but deceptive psychic, Mary McGarvie (Catherine Zeta-Jones), who delivers a psychic act that is part burlesque and part occult. Her young daughter Benji (Saoirse Ronan) assists by providing the information Mary needs to convince the audience of her connection to the afterlife.
What began as a con soon evolves into a far more dangerous affair as Houdini is overwhelmed by Mary's mysterious charm. But as Harry attempts the most spectacular stunt of his career, everyone wants to know - how will the Great Houdini escape? |
