Lionel é um garoto tímido e psicologicamente dominado pela mãe. Numa noite, após saber que ele tem um encontro marcado com uma garota no zoológico da cidade, ela o segue. Acidentalmente atacada por uma espécie rara de macaco, ela morre, mas volta como uma morta-viva sedenta de sangue. Lionel tenta escondê-la dos amigos e, principalmente, da garota, mas a praga se alastra rapidamente, culminando com uma multidão de zumbis batendo à sua porta.
Primeiro filme de Peter Jackson, que se consagrou ao produzir e dirigir a trilogia "O Senhor dos Anéis".
